yup, it is convenient to explore on ur own.

can get the all-nikko pass and take the tobu line from asakusa direct to tobu-nikko station. at nikko, there are buses to get to the various attractions. nikko is a very touristy place, so just follow the crowd and u will get to the attractions.

if u are visiting the world-heritage shrines and temple, a day trip from tokyo is suffice. however, if u are planning to visit lake chuzenji and the various waterfalls in the area, i would suggest staying at least a night in nikko.

I have only one day in nikko so I won't be able to stay overnite..
If I were to take the early train from asakusa to nikko ,, do you think I have sufficient time to visit lake chuzenji,?
Besides that, hope to visit any one of the waterfalls and a world heritage shrine.
So that makes three place in a day..
Is that possible?
Also , to visit all the places that I mention, don't they have a train going there or is it only buses that goes there?
Thanks.

the train only goes to nikko station, from there u have to take bus to world heritage shrine, and another bus to lake chuzenji.

it is about 2hrs by normal train from asakusa to nikko. and 1hr by bus from nikko station to lake chuzenji. kegon waterfall and lake chuzenji are near each other, so u dun need to take another bus. the other waterfalls and lake will require u to take bus.

i think if u really want, can squeeze kegon waterfall and lake chuzenji. but it depends on which part of the year u going also. coz tt time i went in autumn, the sunsets around 4+pm, so not possible to cover so many places.

if u dun mind paying more or using JR pass, there is express train to nikko also. can cut the travelling time to about 1hr iirc

possible to make it for lake chuzenji for a day trip but will be rush. need to look out for bus timing as the bus frequency is super low, like one hour once or twice.

You will have time to either go to the lakes or to see the temples ... Trying to do all in a day is too rush and you probably won't enjoy it to much.
