Radeon HD5570 (2GB)
4gb ram (2x2) (max capacity 4x4)
HDD 1TB SATA
Power supply 300W

Currently com lags quite a bit. Idle to low usage, CPU runs at 20-40%. RAM at around 50%.

I want to upgrade it such that I can play newer games, smoother usage. Any tips?

It would probably make more sense to sell your existing comp and build a new one from scratch.

If you still wish to do an upgrade, then you should focus on parts which you can eventually carry over to a new rig.

In order of priority -

(1) dump that PSU and get something beefier, probably in the 600W or so range;

(2) most games are likely to be GPU limited, so you will get the best bang for the buck by investing in a better GPU. I would suggest a GTX 970 at about $500 new or GTX 960 for $300+ new. Neither of these will work with a 300W PSU, the recommended wattage for the GTX 960 system is a 400W PSU.

The PSU you should buy new. As for the GPU, I would suggest you look at the second-hand market. GPUs depreciate quite fast and it would not make sense to pair an expensive new GPU with your current system. There are a number of good GPUs available on vr-zone marketplace for less than $200.

(3) I assume you are already on a 64-bit OS. If so, you can consider an additional 4 or 8 GB of RAM. RAM is cheap now and will probably cost you around $40/$70 new locally.

(4) An SSD will speed up your system. Around $129 for a Samsung Evo 256GB on Lazada.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure if I have an additional bay for SSD. Do you guys think I can get a GPU, PSU, RAM and a new CPU for $600? Or is changing a CPU not necessary?

There is no point changing the CPU. If you are going that route, might as well change the MB as well and go for a modern 1150 or 1151 system.

GPU - see my earlier comments
PSU - should be less than $100, I leave it to the other guys to make more specific recommendations.

RAM - go and bid here -
http://forums.vr-zone.com/motherboards-cpus-rams/3293166-kingston-hyper-x-ddr3-2gb-x-2-ram.html
Should be able to get it for $30 or less

You don't necessarily need a bay slot for SSD, since there is no mechanical part inside moving during operation. Some people just tape it around the chassis panel lol.

And please do not get single 8GB stick as your motherboard most likely may not support. RAM should get 2nd hand from forum marketplace subforum since have lifetime warranty for those local distro stock.

This is what you'll need:
GPU: Zotac GTX 970 4GB Twin Fan OC @ $440*
SSD: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB @ $139
PSU: FSP Aurum S 600W [80 Plus Gold] @ $85^

Total: $664

Buy others from Lazada Singapore. Haggle for discounts!

All Lazada prices after Shopback.sg 5% electronics rebate
*Price after Lazada Web MasterCard Monday / DBS/POSB Appy Friday / CITIBank Weekend 15% off max $25 discount
^Price after Lazada $20 off min $100 discount [TBA later]

Differences can be in the PCB design, PCB length, PCB components, number of fan blades, fan blades design to give about different combinations of temperatures, fan noise level, overclockability. Different brands offered by different distros come with different length of warranties.

In your case, you should get something that flux in line of the length of the metal PCIe bracket and PCB length to be about/within the length of your mATX motherboard since we do not know the space clearance for graphics card given limited information about that HP PC chassis.

Is it lagging due to a dying HDD?

Try installing a SSD and see it fly! Your CPU and RAM don't seem maxed out by your usage, should not be the cause of your lag imo.

Google MSI MS-7613 and click the HP website. This model might be your motherboard.

Each Ram slot can only support up to 4GB.
This are the ram specification you need to look out for.
1) Value ram
2) 4GB X 1 stick
3) DDR3 1333mhz.

Secondly, better if you can reformat your computer. Maybe your OS load too much random crap.
CPU on idle should be ideally less than 10%.
