Help recommend a Rig for a Primary school student

can i tap on your guys knowledge if you have ever setup a rig for young students.... i think the specs should be very humble considering very little games or huge processing power required.

I'm working on a project to see how we can help needy families by sponsoring a budget PC, something sufficient for daily project work. Other considerations in the project are power consumption, internet connections etc.. but here i would like to ask for advise on Rig alone namely;

1. motherboard, the more integrated (graphics, CPU, audio) the better as it cuts cost compared to getting separately

Pentium G2020 + Asrock H71M-DGS - $136

2. Casing - Any basic case.

3. Ram - Minimum 2GB.. looking at running Win 7 cos WinXp too old, Win 8 too new.

DDR3 1600Mhz CL11 Crucial 4GB @ $43

4. Software - this one i think is the killer as OEM Win 7 @ $120 and MS @ $189 is really ex... any idea on how to get better deals or workaround on this.

5. HDD - no SSD of course.. probably a 500GB or 1TB.

Seagate 500GB @ $69.50

6. Accessories - Mouse/KB/Speakers just the cheapest

7. DVD Rom - cheap one just to install the OS.

LiteOn/SAMSUNG 24X SATA Retail @ $25

8. Monitor - 19 Inch should be reasonable
Is AOC E950Swn @ $119 (18.5') ok ?

9. PSU - Basic 400W ?

i thought so too, maybe will propose 21" instead.... also need to remember the older batch of people here lived with 14"/ 15" during 'our time'

What Terence suggested should be fine. FSP, from what I know is one of the larger OEM makers of psu, so should be somewhat decent. If you're not putting in a video card, 300W is fine.

But yeah..Windows is really expensive. Of course there are ways around it.."cough cough" but I won't go into details here..

i know what u mean.. but just find it hard to ahem this thing for someone else. for myself i dun mind hehe.

How's the retail availability of AMD APUs locally? They make very balanced and all rounded budget PCs.

A55 FM2 chipset + A6 or A8. How much does it cost here?

Also do you know any shops that can offer better price if buying in bulk like say 2 or 3 setups each month... looking at PC Themes atm. Tradepac normally gives good price but their dealings are sometimes suspicious so think going to give it a miss

Fuwell and Cybermind are the 'big' shops... dun think they will entertain me..

Ask their own school got free software or cheap academic version or not. If not get oem locally or home edition from Malaysia.

For usually stable components like DVD drive n monitors, perhaps just buy second hand or even free donations from people like us. Too bad I already gave away some LCDs. I might have a spare graphics card for light 3d gaming and a few 40gb hdds. But problem is someone must have time and space for all these collections.

Btw last time we survived very lousy components. I think the needies would not mind?
I remembered finding my own ways to build my own

Yup. Most likely the usual Vios or Headway.
But they have slightly better ones for slightly more. Will check on friday about those casing. Those should have USB3.
And get a Toshiba or Hitachi @ $65.

Same OEM. Only buy from who nia..
LOL no. Headway and VIOS psus are junk. That's the reason why I recommended the FSP is to replace those junk units.

MOE should be able to supply educational versions of Office and the OS for free (though I wouldn't know how that works).

2 or 3 units a month isn't considered a bulk purchase
