Hi all

I am completing my diploma in Marine Eng soon and am very conflicted with which Uni/degree I should study.

My options from SIT-Newcastle Uni:
1) Marine Engineering
2) Offshore Engineering
3) Naval Architecture

I really do not know much about the marine industry and the differences in these 3 courses. The only thing I’m aware is marine industry/degree is very specialised and I’m not so sure if I really want to be in marine industry. I’m thinking is Mechnical engineering from SIT-Glasgow Uni a better option since it’s broader and has more career options.

Would appreciate if someone can please explain to me the differences between the 3 marine courses and the career of them, and advice me about mech eng too. With both Pros and Cons. Thank you!

1) These are the differences for their scope of work.

a) Marine Engineering = Focus on Ship & System such as M&E.
b) Offshore Engineering = Focus on Oil Platform such as Drilling.
b) Naval Architecture = Focus on Building Ship or Oil Platform Structures.

2) I agree with if you do not know what to do or limit yourself in Marine & Offshore Industry, it is much safer to study Mechanical.

3) Just for your information that if you take up BEng(Mech) from SIT-Glasgow, it is not recognized by PEB Sg for becoming a PE. You still needs to to top up with a MSc(Mech) from NTU/NUS in order to be recognized by PEB Sg.

In general, you do not need PEB SG unless you aim to become a PE. In fact, only very selected few want to gain a PE status... usually more common in civil engineering where PE needs to sign papers (you need someone to blame)...

Gaining a job depends more on your academic results, your university (if you are applying for some "prestigious" companies), your experiences (including your IAs or even part time jobs you have done before), your interview(s)...
