Hi, ive just started poly recently and it turns out its compulsory to have a laptop (singapore poly). Of all the software required, autodesk inventor is the only demanding software.
Basically, i need a laptop which is
-Light(<2kg)
-Portable(13~14")
-Able to run autodesk
-Good battery life
-Priced around 1000$
(Bonus wants)--> A good typing keyboard :X
I hope im not naive to ask this much for such pricing

So far the a student deal im keen on --> Dell Vostro 14 5459
-i7, 930m 4gb, 1080p anti glare, slim and at 1.7kg priced 1398$ seems attractive
However if there is a better option, please recommend !

Note* I really dont like the lenovo ideapad 500s, same price but offer less than the vostro

Check your course of requirements and see which laptop they listed down for you.

Do note, buy from outside only come with 1yr carry-in warranty. Even you buy entended, is still carry-in. From poly, it comes with 3yrs on-site warranty, see the difference. Then you still have to arrange a date with the sch IT staff to install all the necessary softwares or utilities for your course.

If anything wrong with the laptop (buy from outside), the IT staff will not do anything for you to prevent the warranty void. You have to bring it to the service centre yourself. What if you need to leave it there for service, you don't have laptop for your course.

Last time my kid I just get from the sch, so troublesome to go through all these.

I suggest you head to Funan to check out challenger... You may get better deals there... The ASUS lappy for $899 might very well suit you.

Gasp, Autodesk.
Anything Autodesk is a tad bit high on specifications.

What's your budget?

Come on guys, this is poly level. Use Autodesk but also only use basic functions. Probably won't even touch 3D if studying electrical engineering over mechanical.. I recommend you just get a basic laptop, i3, 4gb ram and 500gb hard disk good enough if you want to go cheap. Otherwise get something lightweight that lasts long, e.g. Asus x series or one of those ultrabooks. If you want to game however look elsewhere.

Polytechnic students have been using cad and revit for at least 5 years now.
