Hi all,

A friend purchased a 13" MBP 2011 from a friend. Basically, she was ripped off.

We are trying to wipe out and reinstall 10.8 with her as the admin.

I followed the instructions on this support document:

OS X Mountain Lion: Erase and reinstall OS X

Used Command-R to erase the HD. The recovery disk is locked.

We're stuck here now...in order to sign in to download from the App Store, she needs an Apple ID. She does not have one. The dialog box says "Click Create Apple Id" but I don't see a hyperlink.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

How was your friend ripped off???

Anyway 2011 MBPs all come with Snow Leopard or Lion and you would probably need an AppleID to download Lion too. So you're screwed unless you know the seller's AppleID or use the Snow Leopard DVD that should have come with the MacBook. And if you don't have the Snow Leopard DVD, you will have to buy a Mountain Lion installation on another Mac or buy the Mountain Lion USB from Apple directly.

I purchased 10.8 and am downloading it now. For some reason, it is going to take about 6 hrs to download 4.4 gigs. I don't have 10.8 on my MBP, just 10.6.8.

I am going to follow the instructions on this link unless you something better?

She purchased it from this friend who said it was new for SGD$1500 but you can buy the 2012 MBP for just SGD1588! And the machine was apparently someone else's from before because it says XXXX's MBP.

If the download is slow it's probably because you're on a slow Internet connection. If I am not wrong the download weighs in at 4gig ++

Yes, 4.4 gigs. I suspect it's because of my VPN service. The download speed fluctuates hugely at times.

Mountain lion is not with the 2011

she needs to get the original disc that comes with the machine to do a reformat/reinstall of the mbp.

she can download mountain lion from apps after she purchased it there
by right u cannot give her yr copy of ML?

else u can dl into a usb drive n plug it in? then since HDD is empty, it will boot up from the usb drive?

10.6.8 is SNOW LEOPARD

If her friend was on the up and up, she would have received the discs that came with the machine. She also does not have an Apple ID nor does she have credit cards.

I'm going to simply use Lion Diskmaker and put it on a USB stick. I don't plan on using ML myself anytime soon.

Yep, used Lion Diskmaker and it worked great. Sent a donation to the developer too. (probably need to do another USB stick...think I lost the first one already)

Geeze!!! I spent hours on this (waiting for it to download took a long time so I napped a little) but still it took a good couple of hours to figure this all out and execute it. Set up her Apple ID, set up her Gmail, set up her Skype, etc. It's not often you find a virgin to OS X.

Wipe and install Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
