Help with 7700K temperatures

Hi, just got a 7700K recently and overclocked it and managed to get 4.8ghz @1.26V.

When I stress tested my 7700K with AIDA64 for about 2hours, max temperatures showed to be about 85-86C. Today, I played some R6 Siege and also got maximum 85C and average temperatures were about 78-79C.

Using a H100i V2 as CPU Cooler, and would like to know if those temperatures are acceptable for Singapore cos room temps are higher.

What fans are you using on the H100i V2 radiator?

Currently using the stock fans. Will changing the radiator fans help with temperatures? I could feel the hot air when i put my hands above the top of my case where my radiator is mounted though.

Then it is expected behaviour.

When I was on H80i + 2x stock fans, it was only marginally better than a Noctua L12 low-profile heat sink. The cooling capability improved quite significantly when I moved on to single Gentle Typhoon (2150RPM), then on to 2 as the stock fans hardly push air with annoying fan whine.

But you have 2 issues on hand.

The second requires voiding your CPU warranty to address, delidding.

Hi, much thanks for the help. I have to ask though, will running my 7700K at these temperatures be fine long term (speaking like 4 years) or should I reduce my OC and thus voltage to lower these temperatures?

I had the same issue with my 6700k and backed down to 4.6ghz from 4.7ghz cause the added voltage wasn't worth the heat. Don't forget stress temps are not a representation of your daily usage so you'll be fine. I'll be delidding mine in the near future as the temps drop easily 10-15 degrees.

The temps are definitely on the high side for an overclocked chip where you're already tapping on the tolerance built into the chip than a locked one.

Not sure what motherboard you're using, but I'll suggest:
1. Enabling power management (Speedshift) to reduce idle voltages with the balanced power plan
(or high performance with min CPU state reduced to probably 5%)
-Use it in conjunction with adaptive voltage (Not auto)
2. If that isn't sufficient, I'll suggest either improve the cooling with your AIO fans or decrease the voltage by a notch.
3. Last option will be a processor delid that's not recommended unless you're a hardware enthusiast that's extracting every bit of performance.

Otherwise, overclock.net data on the 7700k predecessor (6700K/6600K) tend to age reasonably well for the typical over 4.4-4.6GHz average overclocker with peaks around 80c iirc.

Maybe you can try to emulate these temps.

I have seen reports of delidding giving up to 20C improvements but the price of the delidding service can go up pretty high(service+shipping). Also, if I’m not wrong, I would need to replace the liquid metal every year or so?

Lastly, I’m using the ASRock Z270 Pro 4. Thanks for the help!

There's a manual 'fixed' voltage and 'adaptive' voltage with most mobos. If you'd like the chip to downclock/undervolt when idling and run cooler on low load, adaptive voltage is for you. Despite what some internet comments are spreading, you *can* create your own OC without losing power management or stability tradeoffs.

To find your stable adaptive voltage, your 'manual' voltage established has to be stable before the conversion.

Additionally, on adaptive mode it may also depend if the implementation of the C states power management are proper in the BIOS. Or else you'll have to disable some of them if there are stability problems.

Post-adaptive mode, if you find the voltage ramps on load are extreme for your preference, some BIOSes allow use of adaptive with positive or negative offsets.

(I'll encourage you to research more on using adaptive mode but the benefits are temperature than negligible utility bill saving oriented. Better to find out more before experimenting)

Delidding wise you'll have to research abit on the method of popping the cap as this may differ from preference and cost considerations. But they range from
-3D printed/CNC milled tools
-Conventional razer blade delidding

what is your idle temp?

is it below 35C?

if it is higher u may wanna check your cpu cooler.

you may wanna redo your thermal paste.

may wanna consider not OCing your rig for now till you fix the temp.

btw is the temp your case temp or core temp... if that is the core temp it should be quite gd as case temp is usually 5-10C lower den core temp

Hi, the temperatures which really concern me are the load temperatures which seem to ramp up really high, so using adaptive voltage wouldnt really reduce them right? Think I’ll pass on delidding and probably reduce my OC if needed. Thanks for the help!

Hi, my idle temps range from 40-45C. The temperatures reported are the core temperatures I believe.

But the with the effect of swapping out the radiator fans to gentle typhoons (about $25 per piece unfortunately) combined, they should lower the stock fan noise significantly with very noticeable temperature improvements.

Overall, I suggest trying the "free to try" workarounds first, before moving up a notch after notch with cost considerations quoted in post 8.

Hi, will definitely try lowering my OC first and see if I get good temps at a lower clock and voltage.

Seeing the above link, it means that my temps are not an outlier and the 7700K is just a chip which runs hot right?

Your load temps don't seem to be an outlier. What you'd probably expect with an overvolt compared to that sample above (even internet before-after delid comparisons of running around 4.9GHz tend to show temperatures above 90c when stressed at start).

It's a hot chip out of the box unfortunately unless you "fix" it.

Hi, by Open GPU u are referring to those non-blower style cards right? If so yes, I'm running the Zotac GTX 1070 AMP! edition. Therefore I should not really be concerned about the temperatures lowering the lifespan of my CPU right? Thanks for the help in advance!

Hi, I just tried dropping my voltage to 1.2V @4.7 Ghz and my maximum temperatures dont really seem to be dropping all that much with ROG RealBench showing up to 86(!)C at max in a short 15minutes test. Should I look more at the average temperatures or the maximum temperatures? Thanks for the help!

It could be a faulty sensor in the H100i. I had a similar problem where the temps would show up as 85 to 90 degrees celsius. Turns out, the sensor was faulty and the temps were actually not that high.

Hi, any suggestions to solve this? I just tried reapplying thermal paste and temperatures actually rose by a few degrees which seems to show that thermal paste was not the issue.
