Hi, I'm currently trying to OC my MSI 980Ti Lightning GPU but i seem to be running into some error regarding core clock speeds. According to MSI Afterburner, my card clock speed is 405 MHz when idling, and during stress testing, the core clock speeds only reaches a max of 595 MHz, way below the default and OC'ed clock speeds. BUT, when I check the data using GPU-Z, the clock speeds seem to be correct.

Do you know what is causing this problem and the difference between the 2 programs?

If ur stress test fails, do u find that the Lightning somehow runs at half the speed (e.g. supposed to run at 1203MHz, end up running at 595MHz)? I kena a few times already. Seems like the card (or GPU clock) went crazy. Rebooting the computer resolves the problem, but still dunno wads the problem. May ask Corbell if it keeps happening frequently.

The card still runs at 595 MHz even before the stress test fails. And even when I'm running the card at default clock speeds (after resetting) during stress test, MSI Afterburner still says 595. But GPU-Z data on clock speeds seems correct (~1392 MHz)

EDIT: But you're right, rebooting my computer does resolve it for now...

I suspect something locked up in the card. When it gets to 595MHz, it runs the stress test at 595MHz, for my case usually Unigine Heaven failure will lock it up real fast. Need to reboot to get back to normal. I may ask Corbell soon (or if clon22 is still hanging around, do respond plz thx).

On a side note, wads ur ASIC value? I'm starting to suspect MSI 980Ti Lightnings mostly have low ASIC scores to aid in watercooled OC.

My ASIC value is 66.9%

Could be the BIOS of the card?

Nope. Diff between standard bios (default) and OC bios is that OC bios has no GPU boost (i.e. fully manual). My suspicion is driver-related issue, coz this issue arises only when Nvidia drivers crash and get recovered.

Idling is only 162mhz for me, I think yours is in 3d movie state, are you using 120hz monitor? There is some reports of high frequency monitor caused high idle gpu states

U also using MSI 980 Ti Lightning?

I guess Lightnings shld hover between 60-70% ASIC values, now that u disclosed urs? The lower ASIC the better the card for watercooling (since the card was made for watercooling/LN2 OC). Guess the card given to royfrosty to test was also an abnormaly ba, ASIC 70+%...

But does the ASIC value really affect the OC potential of the card significantly? What's your value?

Oh really ah? Any other 980Ti users affected (strix, g1 gaming etc) and can verify its driver issue rather than card issue?

Yeah just Google 980ti high idle clock. The reasons can range from high frequency monitor (120/144hz), dual monitor, rouge apps keeping gpu awake, geforce drivers set to prefer maximum clock. TS your clocks are not right, you are suffering from high idle clock and also locked up clocks.

Recommend you reset OC to default, uninstall your OC apps, uninstall gpu drivers and reinstall from there to look at drivers setup first

I'm running a 60Hz monitor. But yea, i'll give your solution a try.

- High ASIC % does NOT mean it can allow you to add more MHz to the core clock. One can have high ASIC % but a poor core and they can only add 20-30MHz before the driver crashes on benchmarks.

- High ASIC % will allow your core clock to boost higher than a lower ASIC % GPU assuming both running on same core clock speed, be it with or without OC.
