Hi,

I need help choosing a gaming laptop. Have been googling and searching in HWZ, narrowed down to 2 of these,

1)GT70 2PE Dominator Pro (GTX880M 8GB GDDR5) w/ backlight multi color KB
2)Alienware 18

Please advice which laptop or other better laptop for consideration?

Would be more concern about performance.

Thanks

you realise the alienware 18 is a SLI laptop unlike the GT70 right? What games do you plan to play, and are you certain both laptops are within your personal budget (cos both are quite pricey)

Yes, about the alienware being SLI,

Don't have games in mind currently.

Whats the most demanding game now? cysis still right? Probably that

Any recommendation or advise on those 2 or better ones?

You can check out Aftershock's Titan which is also a SLI laptop on par with Alienware 18's performance (and those two are the only notebooks on the market able to SLI with top-end GPUs) and should be more value for money compared to the alienware too.

ask yourself what ur gonna use this laptop for.. if it is going to stay on ur desk most of the time (which im guessing is the case since u opted for the 17inchers) then get a desktop. if u plan to use it semi mobile (eg take it out once a week) then maybe this category is for u.

i dont think you will be using this on your lap tho, so the usage scenario for a large gaming laptop is very narrow.

if u plan to move around abit (2-3 times a week) but still want games and dont mind playing at medium or low settings then get a laptop or ultrabook with dedicated graphics. 740M can power most games smoothly at medium - low settings

if u move around alot (everyday) then hv to go with intel 5000 series graphics or lower end dedicated to balance batt life

aftershock is a good alternative to the mentioned laptops spec-wise but you should check out the design and build quality at their showroom to see if its to your liking.

personally i feel its not very premium (maybe is bcos im bias after i heard that the chassis is a generic off-the-shelf then packaged tgt) but its very plastic feeling and they need more branding. eg put the aftershock logo on the bottom of the screen like all laptop manufacturers do and add some names to the stuff they add (like retina display, trueaudio). its all marketing hype but customers always fall for that so why not give them something to fall for? :s13: they happy everyone happy

Generic off the shelf branding?
I'm not completely certain but i'm fairly sure they use the Clevo chassis.

Hardly random off the shelf chassis.

I think ultimately the very first question you need to ask yourself is what games are you planning to play... And at what level of graphics you are able to accept...

Talk about Crysis at 1080p, you can't play Crysis at stable 60FPS at max settings even with GTX880M... Unless SLI.... Witcher 3 and Thief are very gpu intensive games as well, maybe even higher than Crysis imo

So types of games and level of graphic acceptance is important, and after that will be portability.

Mobility maybe once a week, mostly will be putting it in office.

Have just visited Aftershock website, custom made a titan, $9000. Will prolly visit their showroom in Funan sometime soon.

other factor like the screen matt finish is important as i don't like the lighting reflection.

A bit of all i guess, be it high or low GPU intensive.
Max settings of course.

Will check out the Aftershock titan (funan), MSI GT70(Sim Lim?) & Alienware(do they have showroom here?)

If $9000 means you get all the 1TB mSATA + 1TB SSD :o
In that case you shouldn't have a problem with budget :D
You should ask if Aftershock can get i7-4940MX as well
Then last but not least buy games like this Steam Community :: A dJ

just a heads up.. dont expect it to look like a car showroom, or even epicenter for that matter.. its really small (funan) :s13:

once a week then this laptop will do. so u go to work on monday bring it with u, leave it in office for the week and bring it home on fri. thats fine. but if u plan to bring it to office and back home everyday then be sure to have a car and backpack.

alienware is by dell, laptop shops at sim lim and some shops in funan should have

i was talking about clevo. it is considered off the shelf cos u buy it based on what clevo thinks is best for the customer and stick it into a casing.

non off the shelf would be custom laptop mainboards like razer, alienware, apple. those can reduce size and improve design

I am using the GT70 dominator pro 2pe ... so far so good very happy with the performance....

I still prefer MSI over alienware 18. 880M is more than enough for me. I save money to buy more games to enjoy.

If you are going to leave it in office, better buy a kensington lock for it :)
