Help with LGA 775 board

Managed to snag a x38 asrock board from the recent giveaway. I tried to pair it with a 650ti. There is power coming thru the usb/fans are spinning, there is no display from the gpu. Initially, i thought that i might have a bad 650ti. Hence, i swapped it with a r9 390 from my main rig. However, even with the r9 390, although the x38 board manages power up, but there is still no display.

I have double checked my PSU and i am sure it is working properly. I am running the following on a testbench

02x ddr2 ram
Q8300
gtx 650ti/ r9 390
seasonic 620w m12

Is there such a thing whereby the gpu is too new for the mobo? Appreciate any ideas to help me get this to work thanks


UPDATE: I have given up on making it work and have chosen to pair the E8300 with the asrock board instead. Thanks to all for helping me troubleshoot the board

I had a working p35 mobo with 7850 which is the same era as your 650TI

doubt that the GFX is too new for the card,

the mobo got onboard GFX or not? maybe you can try disabling that 1 first

or did you forgot to plug in the power for the gfx hehe

just curious how did you know the mobo can post if you can't see anything on the screen =/

Sorry I made a mistake in my original post. i assumed it post-ed as i had power coming thru USB. I dont think there is onboard gfx, i have checked the reviews and spec list and none of them mentioned any onboard gfx. I have also checked my power to my gpu and i can confirm that i have powered it properly

Which asrock board? But from what I think if u still can't get any display most probably it's the board PCIE x16 is damage. Do you have another PCI x16 slot? Maybe can try.

Oh and did the 650ti works on your main rig?

You need to check for bloated caps, if the caps is aluminium type. If solid type then no way to check. Also check for bottom pcb corrosion. I also have a few boards that have bloated capacitors, and the intel G45 board also has bloated capacitor + corrosion at bottom pcb.

To test motherboard, its better to test it on the bench, with only 1 ddr2 ram (swap slots if no boot)

I believe the boards were kept for too long, that's why. Also, the cr2032 battery were on the board, causing some boards to have leaky bios (due to battery draining empty to 0 volt), hence it is better to remove cmos battery when storing it for a long time.

Long time ago in year 2007 or 2008 i had the same symptoms when building for customer w an msi x38 or msi x48 or the x48c board, but with a graphics card from that era.

Recent giveaway i took a p35 board. Initially wanted a x48 or x38 but no luck. I haven tried my p35 board, not sure if i will encounter the same issue.

The problem i faced 10 years ago was because the cpu i placed was "too new" for the mobo, thus it was not "supported" by the bios yet.

I think i put a new core 2 quad q9550 cpu. The system starts up too w power n fans spinning. Just no display. Fan run full speed wont come down. Not sure if there is any beep.

So i took an old cpu q6600 or q9450 (last time i got many spare) n power up the x38 or x48, then flash the bios to the latest one and then it works.

X series chipset required 8 pins ATX 12v power, if you connect using 1 2x2 12v, it won't POST.

My board is the Asrock x48 turbowifi (the one with a very weird 24pin slot). I have confirmed that my 650ti is working fine in my main rig.

I have also reseated the ram but no luck.

@commach just to confirm, the 8pin atx 12v you referring to is the 4+4pin right?

How is the bios flashing done? Can it be done in my current context? (no display)

Yes, the 4 x 4 12v.

For other series, 2x2 12v is OK but not X series which mandatory required 8 pins 12v power.

Don't flash the BIOS at this point in time, without 8 pins 12v, the motherboard will not POST hence nothing display on the screen.

Oh I see, I have just checked and I am definitely using the 4+4 8pin cpu to power the motherboard though

Asrock board is always very picky on ram/cpu, like X48 board era I would think it is all bios control, but after reading the manual, surprised to see that there is still the FSB jumper on the board ?!

You can refer to the manual Pg 11 No 38 for the FSB1 FSB2 FSB3 location (in between the ATX power and X48 chipset , and pg 27 for FSB1333 (for Q8200) jumper settings. try it and let us know

If you want to overclock the CPU you adopt to FSB1333 on this motherboard, you
need to adjust the jumpers. Please short pin3, pin4 for FSB2 jumper and pin4, pin5 for
FSB3 jumper. Otherwise, the CPU may not work properly on this motherboard.

Oh I see, I have just checked and I am definitely using the 4+4 8pin cpu to power the motherboard though

4-pin cpu power will work, not necessary 8-pin, see manual pg 33.
Even 20-pin psu will also work.

Ok guys, i managed to get the board working..sort of. I managed to dug up a E8300 from my brother and this is where things started to get kind of weird.

1) Same thing as always, i reset the CMOS by shorting the pins.
2) Put in the Q8300, no luck
3) Replace the Q8300 with my brother's old E8300
4) Managed to have display but got stuck(?) at the POST screen
5) Powered down, took out the E8300 and put back in the Q8300
6) The board boots with the Q8300 now and theres display but still stuck(?) at the POST screen

I have no idea whats going on, its magic

Edit: I managed to snag one Asus P5E3 too from the giveaway and i have a stick of 2x DDR3 2GB coming in maybe tomorrow from taobao. Hence i will probably just switch over to the asus P5E3 if this asrock board continues to be so finicky

When power up, it either get stuck at the Logo or...

In the rare occasion my keyboard driver gets loaded, i get stuck at this stage. I have a Ubuntu boot usb connected to the mobo, however, i am unable to get into the boot menu as it would get stuck before i can press F11

disconnect any ssd or hdd if there are.. and see how it goes..

Theres no ssd or hdd attached to it, just the usb boot drive containing ubuntu and a usb keyboard
