CPU - i5 6600k
Mobo - MSI 7170A Krait Gaming (?)
Case - Fractal Design r5
PSU - Seasonic G series 650W
RAM - gskill ripjaws-v 2400 2x8gb
GPU - gigabyte r9 280x
CPU fan - noctua dh-d15
Monitor - AOC 27” i2757FH (?)

Looking to build a new battlestation mostly for 60+fps 1080p gaming (CS GO, fallout4, etc the new and upcoming games on ultra, or close to all ultra settings). I'm taking some parts from my brother's rig like the graphics card (dun include in budget) and hard drives.

Is the motherboard overkill for my needs? I'm not looking to OC straight away but in the future. The cpu/mobo combo at fuwell is 615$.

The gfx card was bought a few months ago only but I can (hopefully) sell and upgrade if necessary..

I'm also uncertain about the monitor, just looking for a 27" 144mhz one.

Thanks in advance for any help :s12:

1. Skip the unlocked cpu; very little improvement in fps. Maybe can look at its locked brother and also can step down to a cheaper mobo (a non-z variant)

2. Yeah overkill unless intending to SLI. Even CF don't need a Z chipset board. As mentioned earlier, OC CPU has little impact on fps.

3. 27' 144hz screen are not cheap, coming in at least 900-1000 dollars (half your budget). In addition, the gpu horsepower needed to drive at reasonable fps to take advantage of high refresh (even for 1080p) for current games is insane.

I think at 2k with monitor, your budget is still some what unrealistic* and have to settle for some compromises here and there (unlocked chip, 144hz display)

Component Product Price
Motherboard + Processor Gigabyte Z170MX-Gaming 5 + i5 6600K $602
Memory G.Skill Ripjaws V 2400MHz CL15 (2x8GB) $219
Power Supply Superflower Leadex 650W Silver $129 (Lazada)
Flash Storage Zotac Premium SSD 240GB $139 (Lazada may drop further)
Mass Storage Toshiba 3TB 7200rpm 3.5″ $138
Case Fractal Design Arc Mini R2 $129
Cooling Deepcool GamerStorm Lucifer V2 $69 (If you have the noctua already then forget this one)

Total : 1286$. The rest is from PCT. You may want to look into dropping the RAM for 2 pieces of DDR4 valueram for 50$ saving that 50$ can put towards a 970 or so but I wouldn't do that, still can't trust SLI.

On the other hand you can also skip overclocking, something I wouldn't bother these days.
Go for a i5-6500 and a Gigabyte H170M-D3H. (Perhaps B150M-D3H). Won't see a single fps difference.
Or even better to save money i5-4590 and a ASRock H97M-D3H

The 280x is more than good for 1080p 60Hz (when I used to have a 280x it was regularly doing way more than 60fps in games I usually would play including BF4). My advice is keep it because values for that GPU is pretty low now. So get more out of it and wait for next gen.

27" 144Hz are pretty damn expensive. Your options are really limited now maybe the 468$ benq XL2411Z? The cheapest is probably XL2730Z.
And it supports freesync which I can't recall works on the Tahiti XTL or not (At least some of the 280x uses Tahiti XTL)
If you want to stick to IPS I would buy the Dell U2515H. 25" 1440p :D

Isn't the price difference between the 6600k and 6600 >$20? guesstimating, can't seem to find cpu only prices

I think I'll just look at 27" monitors, not necessarily 144mhz

Not just that, also the board. 6600k requires a z170 mobo to take advantage of OC. While 6600k is only a mere 20 dollar more expensive than 6600, the z170 boards are expensive as hell compared to b150 and h170?

I don't need hard drives, reusing my brother's crucial m4 SSD and 2 WD HDDs. So the money from that can go towards a monitor possibly

Ahh I see, that makes sense thanks! My knowledge on mobos is my most limited area when it comes to building PCs :(

Hahaha I guess we all have to learn some where. Between z170 and unlocked vs h170 and locked you can expect to save up to 100 bucks? Gaming stuff are just gimmicky :p

A easy way to differentiate between boards:
B150 no intrinsic raid support and no cfsupport, no oc
H170 CF support, raid, no SLI support no OC support
Z170 supports raid, cf, and OC (and other bells and whistles)

You can expect to save 54$ from Z170 to H170 (Z170-D3H vs H170M-D3H) but the B150M-D3H does everything you want, RAID is not a option most use anyway.

H170 doesn't allow lane splitting (It's not so much of a chipset limitation but a limitation for marketing reasons ...)

the Z170-D3H could be interesting as asrock's skylake boards look really cheap. That copper heatsink ain't fooling me.

mATX should be your main option, not point in having a mid tower only to put a single GPU lol.

No seriously. Time to lead the way to show that PCs are to be small not big :D

ASRock orange heatsink is copper? I thought just orange colour coated normal aluminium heatsink....
