So my brother has this friend who built a new pc and he basically gave his old pc to my brother. After some tinkering and cleaning he got the rig to work. This are the parts from the device manager

Wd green 1.5tb x2
asus hd6870
Amd phenom II x4 970
asus m4a88t v evo usb3
Cooler master gx650w
Ram 16gb

im not sure whats the case. Added photo of case and internals

Must i do anything to it or can use as it is? Not sure how old de and my bro plays games like dota2 and csgo

Those games can ba I guess, maybe just add on a 256GB SSD and it would be fine for these kinds of games

I disagree.
If want to upgrade.
Should upgrade CPU + GPU.

Amd phenom II x4 970
asus hd6870
Current Specs can let you play smoothly above 30FPS in Medium for most games.

for the games you quoted, it should be enough to play maxed out. AAA games will have to lower setings to around medium, but should still be playable. if you wanna upgrade, you can try searching for a used hd 7950/7970 or gtx 580/670/680 for around $100-150, then download msi afterburner to check for bottlenecks. if your cpu does bottleneck, can try to search for a phenom x6 cpu

best is find and change better CPU GPU and powersupply...optional SSD.. then the rig will rock like hell...

The WD Greens are lower power consumption hard disks typically used for archival storage, so they do perform lot slower.

Do consider SSD, 256gb is around the sweet spot for price to performance ratio now. Clean install OS to SSD, and you should have quite an enjoyable time with the rig.

But if TS just want to enjoy those games listed above, just adding an SSD is fine already cause this setup no problem with these games at 1080p

But if want to play AAA then of course a different story loh

with his setup, i don't think he even has to add an ssd if he wanna save and don't mind the slower speed. just download the games and start playing can liao :s13:

you are definitely fine with this setup for games like Dota 2.. don't worry.

Priority is to change the processor, but it comes with great cost because of needing to change motherboard and ram to.. an overhaul to be precise.

So my suggestion is just leave it to be, in the future consider to get a new rig.. recycle this rig to other people or sell it.
