Help with Places to go

Hi all. Planning to go with family to Taiwan in end December. depart around 20th and stay there for about a week or so.
Need recommendations for places to go(not tourist places) and if possible how to go there by public transport. Thanks!

Main Places would be around Taipei and Taichung. Would appreciate more suggestions! only been there once quite a few years back so I don't know Taiwan well.

If you going with family, better to rent cab 3500 ntd one day.
because jiufen n shifen alone, you can take 4hrs at least for waiting and travelling by public transport
