Help with potential ram or mobo slot problem

I have 4 slot on my mobo with 4 x 4GB 1333 kingston ram on all 4 slots.

But recently, i have been promted that my ram settings have been changed and have to select either f1 to enter bios to change ram setting or f2 to run on default. Upon start up, a quite check on system from my computer > properties show that my ram is only 8GB with 3.98 GB usable. That should not be the case as it should read 16GB somewhere right???

Any pros can tell me is I noob asking noob question or is there something wrong with my ram or my mobo.

the test will check for errors in your RAM, you can see it if there is any. let it run a few passes overnight (it will automatic continue on if you don't ask it to stop) if u want to be sure. if impatient just run 1 time loh

1) Check if you are using 32bit OS or 64bit

32bit only limits to 4gb of ram.

2) Off your pc and plug out the power cable. Then:
Use alcohol wipes to clean contact points on mobo and ram. or use eraser on ram pins(contact point). then let it dry for awhile.
Then resit the ram(push down firmly. with some force(on the corners) until there's a 'click' sort of sound"


try 1 and 2. if all fails. possible ur ram is fault or motherboard damaged.

to check ram, you have to do it 1 by 1.

I am on 64 Bit OS so should read 16GB without problem. I remember when i first upgraded from 8GB to 16GB it was noted that there was 16GB, but now got this problem...hmmm

as for testing 1 by 1, are there any priorities for ports on mobo or any ram slot also can?

1) for testing 1 by 1, u need to check which is the priority ram slot for single ram. This is very tedious and long but try and bear with it.

Basically you find the priority ram slow either via internet on your motherboard(as all mobo are different) or look at your manual. It should tell you how to put in a single ram on which slot.

with that you can figure out which ram is spoilt. If nothing is wrong, then chances are you have a spoilt ram slot. But try again. Try cleaning it. don't pour alcohol on it but maybe get a wetter wipe and clean it. Remember to let it try(30sec).



2) Ram slots are tricky. And depending on your motherboard priority settings its very hard to figure out. So just follow step 1. If you can figure out if your ram is ok or not you can take the necessary step.


if ram faulty, RMA them then resit them.

If Rams are all ok, RMA your motherboard.
