I’ve been on a legacy 500mbps plan (I think the router is wifi 5) without contract. Recently I have been having intermittent loss of connection and the technician who came down did not do anything other than to look at the error message I got before saying it’s a router problem. SingTel will not provide me with a free replacement router unless I recontract at a higher price. Is there any issue if I buy a SingTel router from other people and replace on my own? I also thought of getting another router of perhaps better quality as SingTel routers seem to spoil every few years but it seems I will need SingTel to enable bridge mode which is no longer available?

Can I buy Wifi 6 Singtel routers to work with my current modem and plan and will I need to get SingTel to change some settings at its end? Are there other security issues I should consider?

IMHO.
My household is on Singtel 500Mbps. Recently after >5 years, the ONT ac adaptor died and the router died because it was turned off for quite a while. I just use an old Asus RT-AC86U.

Think it this way even if you pay higher.
When you recontract at least you get a free router.
I will not recommend Singtel due to the issues they have including bad customer service.

Try go with M1 or Starhub less than $40 with free WIFI 7 router.
If you buy second router there will be few things to take note:

- Need to reset the router most when sell the router they never reset.
Unless brand new sealed than no need.
- If used set may failed or spoil.
- Need Singtel profile than the router can work.

Is up to you which you decide.
Brand new router depends on your budget.
If you want the cheapest and best will be Dlink X3000Z around $60.

This router does look like Asus router you are using.
The good thing about this router is plug and play.
Just plug in and it will setup by itself.

If you want to change the WIFI SSID you just need to log in and change yourself.
For budget router I will recommend Dlink.

Just get a 3rd party dc power supply online for the ONT. Just ensure voltage same and the barrel plug same size.

My ONT power supply oso died a couple of years ago. Did what I mentioned.

For router, go find a new and cheap asus routers on platform like carousell. Many dump these Wifi 7 Asus routers when they sign up to a new ISP. Probably theirs are of high-end models so dump these away to offset their sign ups.

My parent still wants to maintain the analogue homeline and it is included in the price if I stay with SingTel broadband. If I get Dlink, how do I set up the SingTel profile?

Like I shared that Dlink if you are interested is Plug and play.
Don't need to do anything except if you want to change the WIFI name and password
than you need to log in.

Else this is the by far the cheapest and simplest router you can get.

If you are using Singtel ONT, it is not plug and play for 3rd party routers. But it is not difficult if you buy those with SingTel VLAN support, like Asus and TP-Link.

SingTel WiFi 6 routers are plug and play with either Singtel ONT or ONR, but they are either EOLed or soon to be EOLed, so you should not go with them.
Reference for Asus and TP-Link router: you need to select SingTel VLAN profile.

The following are two Cheap and pretty decent one below S$100 (or less than S$80 if you find the right seller). They are cheap because M1 bundles them free with M1 3Gbps plan. They are way better than the lousy Singtel WiFi 6 routers. But you can get cheaper Asus/TP-Link ones as well if you want to save more. For example, second hand units of Archer BE230 and RT-BE58U may well be cheaper than S$50.

Asus RT-BE58U WiFi 7 BE3600 router, dumped by M1 users.

How much is your current pricing for the 500 Mbps plan?

You can do the calculation to see if it makes sense to upgrade to 3Gbps or 5Gbps plan and then pay for the Analog phone.

Some users are able to get S$29.90 per month pricing with Singtel 3Gbps or 5Gbps recontract offer, with free HB611-SGST router.

Analog phone is at about S$10 per month.
https://www.singtel.com/personal/products-services/more/telephony-services/home-line

Example Singtel 5Gbps recontract offer: you may or may not get this offer, YMMV.
https://www.singtel.com/personal/products-services/broadband/eform/recon-edm/5gbps
5Gbps Enhanced Plan at $29.90/mth (U.P. $70.90/mth)
Comes with 1 x Singtel WiFi 7 (TP-Link BE11000) Router

If you are keen on the above combination, you may want to check out Singtel thread below to see how people manage to get the above offer.

The other option is of couse to move out of Singtel but pay for Singtel Analog phone. You may need to talk to Singtel to debundle the analog phone service first from your legacy Singtel 500 Mbps plan.

Then you can go with either M1 3Gbps (S$32.90 per month with free WiFi 7 router) or Starhub 3Gbps/5Gbps at about S$29.55 per month with free router. You can check out the sticky thread for the latest promotions.
https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/...sg-isp-comparison-latest-promo-deals.6665380/

The following 5Gbps offer from Starhub may be the best now.

As per the report from a forum member, you can contact the famous Selina (search the forum for her contact info) to get the following offer for StarHub Fibre Internet service.

1) 5Gbps Broadband @$29.55/mth
- 1x Free TP-Link HB710 WiFi 7 router
- Free $100 Shopping Vouchers --> upgraded to S$150 voucher later

2) 10Gbps Broadband @$44.49/mth
-1x Free TP-Link EB810v WiFi 7 router
- Free $250 Shopping Vouchers

3) 10Gbps Broadband @$33.59/mth
-1x Free TP-Link HB710 WiFi 7 router
-No Voucher

Installation and activation fess waived
*24 months contract

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Note: she is famous since Dec 2024.

You can WA her at this no. 81161630, her name is Selina

TP Link EBV 810 is $15 monthly for 24 months.

Activation and installation fee are waive according to her

Hi Xiaofan
I’m paying $29.90 currently. They offered me a higher rate to recontract. I prefer not to recontract as I will be charged a much higher rate once the contract expires and I don’t renew (no certainty what the recontract rates will be by then and I don’t fancy having to call in to bargain about the rates). The technician brought a Huawei HG8240T5 during the visit. Is that also EOL in terms of security updates?

That is an ONR. It is a wired router without wireless function.

Power users will avoid ONR. But in your case it may well be okay for you. You still need a wireless AP to give you the wireless function.
