High capacity HDD for Unraid NAS

I am putting together an Unraid server. I am looking for a HDD not for parity use, so I don't need NAS reliability or speed. Mainly looking for storage size.

Is there any line I should consider?

Second that. I'm using the 12TB HC520/530 in my PC. It's quiet and stable.

but what about the temp is it quite hot?

Didn't monitor the temp but no issues when doing a 20+ hour backup from one 12TB HC520/530 in my PC to another one inside an external WD Elements casing.

It shouldn't get toasty if there's some form of airflow over the drives. My shucked WD Helium drives sit at around 45deg Celsius on idle. I don't spin down my drives.

Thanks for the recommendations. But to emphasize again I don't need NAS reliability because this would not be a parity drive. It can be slower than regular drives because I will introduce a SSD cache. Because of the cache it can be scheduled to spin-up once a day for update, and not every HDD in the array will need to spin up.

So main consideration is capacity - not speed of access or reliability. I am also looking at 2.5" HDD.

If you're not looking for speed or reliability then anything under the sun will fit your requirement.

Just buy the cheapest 2.5" drive of your desired capacity.

This is true. Mainly I was looking for advice on best brand/line and value from this low end of the bunch.

Actually from 2.5" seems like not many high capacity drives are available.

According to diskprices.com, the WD externals for shucking have extraordinary value as usual if you're going mid-high capacity.

Toshiba drives are still my favorite if the prices are good - they are reliability champs on the backblaze blogs, and have no issues getting recognized on hardware (compared to the Seagate EXOS Drives). These days high capacity EXOS are dirt cheap though!

Too bad cheap SMR drives are uncommon - they are truly ideal drives for unraid.
