Hi all,

I have been planning to build a pretty high end gaming rig to handle the next generation of PC Games and the following are the options that I have shortlisted:

PC Casing: Fractal Design R5 OR Corsair Graphite Series 760T

CPU: i7-4790 OR i7-5820

MOBO: Asrock X99 Extreme 4 OR Asus X99 Deluxe OR Gigabyte X99 SOC Force

GPU: Gigabyte GTX980Ti G1 Gaming 6GB

PSU: Seasonic X Series 850W Modular Gold PSU OR Coolermaster V850 850W 80+ Gold

SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB (5yrs) OR Crucial MX200 250GB (3yrs) OR Crucial BX100 250GB (3yrs)

RAM: 8GB - to get DDR3 or DDR4?

Looking at a budget of around 3.5k (without monitor) and intend to get the components from Fuwell.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks! :)

4790 and 5820 different socket...

Do you intend to overclock?

What is your monitor resolution first and what games do you play?

Do you want a HDD?

You don't need a 850W PSU for a single GPU in system.

What's your budget

Looking at the upcoming ASUS IPS GSYNC 4K 27inch monitor... ROG Swift PG27AQ.

Yes, likely I will overclock but the reason I am leaning towards the 5820k is because of the fact that it has 6 cores compared to the 4 cores of the 4790k...

Will be playing current games like Witcher 3, Batman Arkham Knight and upcoming games, Metal Gear Solid 5 Phantom Pain, Fallout 4 and Star Wars Battlefront...

Looking at a 850W PSU so as to future proof the system and leave the option open for SLI... And yes, will be adding a HDD as well...

Budget as stated in my earlier post - $3.5k

Any preference for colour theme? 6 core CPU is still largely unneeded for gaming currently though. Current X99 platform will be rather expensive to build (i know you have the budget) due to the inflated cost with DDR4.

Noted, thanks for reply. No real preference for colour theme. Reason I was looking at 6 cores is to also future proof the system - hoping it will last for at least 4 years. Ok so for the x99 boards, can only go with DDR4?

Future proofing is a misnomer.
What moneyface pointed out is right, 6 core is really overkill. Games not optimised for high numbers of cores but rather quad cores with a decent clockspeed.

You mind getting ddr4 from amazon? Is a lot cheaper than local prices

I see. So if I go for the i7-4970, I don't have to get the X99 mobo right? Which mobo would be good then? I guess I will stick with DDR3 then...

4790 you mean. Hmm I mean if you have the budget go for what you like. If you want to overclock and cut costs at the same time, a 4690k is enough at handsomely some fractions of the price.

Anw ddr4 will become mainstream soon with coming Intel 100 series chipset may or may not want to hold your horses like the bro below mentioned

Then in some way you can be 'futureproofing' because rams are widely recyclable in your future builds...
not waiting for the upcoming Intel cpus?

Thanks for the advice. Any idea when will the new Intel chipsets be coming out? And what will the price ranges be like...

Waha bro, long time no see. Good luck in the new system. I would recommend an 512GB SSD coupled with 1 or 2TB spindle drive. What I do is that I have the OS and some current games that I play on the SSD while the 2TB drive holds non gaming software. Other than that everything looks good. Oh you might want to pick up the G1 980TI now at PCT for $1100 because CDL says the low pricing is for promo only, it may shoot back up. Also stocks are low. Faster buy. The rest can slowly buy.

oh ok. so now the question is you willing to wait?

Haha I'm quite an impatient person actually and I already put my old PC up for sale.... I could wait but there seems to be no concrete date at the moment on when the new chipsets will be released.... Hmmm

Haha I keep wondering at how ppl like claim it will future proof.

Den again with the slow progression of semi-cond industry as a whole (harder and harder to squeeze out more performance on the same material). Future proofing might not be irrelevant for sure.

Go for the best quad core CPU, u might not need to change it for the next 5-10 years.

4790k yes, gtx 980 Ti not too sure. It depend on the performance of future DX12 games, but most importantly, the resolution of the display at which u are satisfy as.

If you are able to live with 1440p for the next 5 years at least, den yes, it good for 980 Ti. 4K can be rather hard to drive on games in the next 3 years onward.

So should go for the i7-4790K right? According to some sites, the 980Ti is meant for 4K gaming... Heh
