Every year airline price wont be exactly the same ...
If there is lesser seats left, then airline would up their price ...

Perhaps there is lesser seats left, hence the price is much more expensive.
However, if there is still a portion of seats unsold, the airline might still have discounted rates to sell those seats that are still available ....

Airline fares pricing don't work this way :s8:

There are a lot of factors. If it's that simple as you say (lesser seats), you can also be a pricing analyst.

One factor is the pax's routing. The airline would rather sell the HKG-SIN seat to someone who's flying LHR-HKG-SIN or SFO-HKG-SIN to someone who's only flying HKG-SIN. Simple reason, revenue.

Full planes are not always necessary. Sometimes high fares is becos the airline doesn't want you. The aircraft can carry only so much weight. It can more profitable for a carrier to transport high-value cargo than a few extra customers.

Selling 300 seats at $100 each is (almost) similar to selling 150 seats at $200 each. Let's not talk about manpower for a load of 300 pax vs 150 pax and fuel consumption (for this comparison).

Good explanations ... Haha demand and supply is just a generic explanation. Yup learnt about the passenger load factor, all those calculation and air rules in my uni module before haha ...The job of a reveneue analyst is challenging.

From my experience, cathay always overbooked their economy seats.
Hence people would tend to get upgraded to business class seats ...

i want to go to hk around 20-26 december but it seems cheapest night flight is $568 for economy by cathay pacific. Any cheaper or is this typical? Last year I paid around $450 and thought it was a bit higher than the previous year.

Bought my Cathay flight tickets for this Aug for $300 (after tax all) at Via dotcom. It's cheaper compared to booking direct to Cathay... check so much but found this in the end through skyscanner

Seems like times were bad ...

First time seeing cathay and Singapore airline having $198 promo ...
This year cathay broke record, 151sgd to bangkok , more worth than budget airline ...
