when your hobby is able to make you a lot of money.. it stops being a hobby, more like a full time job.

Take the game Dota 2 for example, there is a major competition every year where the first prize is close to $1 million US for each person. few hundred Ks for 2nd and 3rd. notch bad.

But when you reach that kind of level, playing the game doesn't feel like a hobby anymore. Because you would have to do it even when you don't feel like it. You are unable to say like today I have no time, I wish to stop playing - no! you got to make time out for it even when you just don't feel like doing it.

Tiagong those top streamers on Twitch earn quite decent......

But so far I never see any famous gamer from spore there yet...

Most hobbies tend to make one spend. Are there hobbies where one can make money and hopefully, become rich? Instead of hobbies -> expenses, are there hobbies -> income?

Investing and collecting dividend is my hobby, and its making me money:D

Ok, some other hobby that makes money

My friend has an interest in making tarts and cakes, and she start her own online shop selling them . Similar for handmade soap or bubble tea etc, but you have to be really good in it to attract lots of customers.

Actually I personally know 4 friends whose hobbies either became a business for them or earned them extra income.

1. Founder of Nebula, also creator of VPN GOM (go away MDA). Started as a fun project in uni, now running as a full time business.

2. Founder of bike site ToGoParts.com, similarly started as an undergrad project to connect with fellow bikers. Now also a full time entrepreneur.

3. Female blogger who started blogging in uni days. She makes good money from advertisers.

4. Former fund manager, stopped work, got bored but likes to bake. Selling cakes now online.

I realized that you have a better chance of succeeding in business if the product evolved naturally from personal interest. People ask me all time what business to start, I always tell them to look within. The business I cofoundered and sold also stemmed from personal interest in the Internet.

If you are talking about hobbies that you spend a little now and future make money, then there is a lot.

However, if you are talking about hobbies that you don't spend even a single cent now and can still make money, then no.

eh? u mean like stamp collecting, collectibles, wine, fine art etc ah?
or trading also?

my friend actually likes to drive. driving relax him after work, i think he is a damn happy uber driver now.

i lost quite a fair bit of money in the first 1 year. glad that i am in tune with some good habits and spotting, so finally recuperated my losses and moving forward with better trading skills

Dota as well. Actually dota more lucrative because prize money of their competition is around $10m usd, higher than any games out there.

As long as a game is popular enough, the prize $$ will follow and DOTA is king at the moment.
