i see.
If my requirements is simply to have camera around the house for monitoring when we are away and to save the footage to cloud storage and to have alerts send to the mobile phone/app when there is motion detection at night or when we are out of house, would a simple solution from Google nest cams or even Tuya IP Cams suffice?

google nest cams/ tuya ip cams probably cost <$100 each and with 10 cams , it will only cost <$1000 and probably monthly cost of $10 a month for the cloud storage

You may also consider Xiaomi security camera. I am using 2 for internal monitoring with 24h recording to SD card. The model I use allows for motion detection alert at a preset time period.

This.

i have 3 Xiaomi all with 24h recording to SD card + motion/people/noise detection alerts
- Live stream/playback on App (SG region Mihome server), PC IMICamera.exe or android emulator
- Supports Smart HomeAssistant integration
- 2 way comms
- Alert setting for People/motion with time period

Mi Camera 2k Magnetic Mount 125° for indoor
- 24/7 recording to SD card
- Night infra
- 2.4ghz Wifi only
- Small and easy to mount anywhere

Mi 360 2k Pro for door entrance (from window)
- 24/7 recording to SD card + NAS
- Night infra with colour (much clearer)
- 2.4/5ghz Wifi
- 360° PTZ + tracking

All in just ~$100-120+

Anyone using Uniquiti's protect range? Looking to use their APs at home, since they have that offering of cameras and nvr I am wondering if it's good? Looking at their doorbell too as a complete surveillance package. I prefer not to use the cloud..

I am using a DIY setup consisting of Synology NAS, Hikvision and Reolink CCTVs.

For stability, do consider wired connection as I faced intermittent connection issue when using wireless connection for the Reolink. Now all CCTVs are powered and connected via PoE.

Live view and recording handled by Synology NAS.

Hey there, for Synology NAS, it does not support over-ride function, am I right? You need to pay for a license software to do that, the standard NAS just does recording.

You mean overwrite function?

It does support overwrite function without additional cost. For each CCTV, I define what is the maximum storage size and the retention period. Synology NAS automatically manage the overwriting and retention period for me.

I only paid for an additional CCTV licence as my NAS supports up to 2 CCTV and I have 3 CCTVs.

So far everything is working perfectly with my CCTVs (2 Hikvision and 1 Reolink). It handles event triggering from my Reolink as well, i.e. when motion is detected, an email notification is sent to me and call-up my internal home automation API to turn on the light.

Is anyone using Hikvision bought directly from China? How is it?
idk if you still need this advise but i got 4 poe (power over ethernet) hikvision camera from taobao 5-6 years ago with NVRecorder (purple WD HDD from challenger).
diy converted all rj 11 point to rj 45 (bought the connectors/ lan cables, cable tester, casing from taobao too)
3m tape the base on hikvision camera onto my ceiling (wise choice because easy remove when i sold my place)
pull lan cable from port to camera on ceiling.

setup using youtube guide (alot available)
have it accessible via within home network (no external access)
set up vpn back to home router
access cctv video feed from mobile file (after turning on to vpn back to home router)

total cost i think 300-400 for hikvison + nvr
small change for rolls of lancable, trimmer, cutter, connectors, head etc.
some 3m tapes around $20+
wd purple hdd around i forgot it think less than 100 from challenger
and several weekend/nights (time consuming to learn and diy but it was satisfying)

btw new place, i give up spending time or money on setting cctv. (may consider in future if there's time again)
Just get some tp-link tapo & xiaomi cameras & base mount sticker to paste on ceiling. (able to 2 way communicate back is a hugh advantage for these ip camera)
