currently running windows server 2012 on a headless PC. using it largely as a file server and for running torrent services.

using a 4port Sata itx board, with 4 drives.
looking to expand it to a more robust solution with raid5.

I'm just inking if I go with windows software raid. then when I need to change new mainboard (sth w more Sata ports etc) will the array be plug and play recognized?

If i can remember well, you cannot use the same RAID on a different motherboard. Unless you are porting to a same chipset and/or controller, otherwise it will not work.

Other forumers may correct me in case i am wrong.

Yes, unless its same chipset, it will not work.

As one person has suggested, get a RAID card. Ebay has plenty of them.

Something like this will do. Its SAS but compatible with SATA.

i clobbered some spares together and made a nas4free server with 3 x 2TB !
Raidz.
boots off thumbdrive, very nice.

for windows server 2012, it seems software raid via windows is recommended solution.
this way it's not tied to hardware raid card, so u can move it between setups.
apparently juz a sata expansion card will do (no need raid).
