I am going to have upcoming large hospital bills. I am thinking whether I should not let the Hospital e-claim for me but I use credit cards to make my own payments instead & then submit the claims directly to the insurance company on my own instead. Reason is I like to get something out from my credit cards payments. Is this a good idea?

It’s up to you.

If you want to pay any portion of the bills using MediSave then that’ll have to be subtracted from the amount you can put on a credit card. (You can’t file a personal MediSave claim.) The insurer may or may not pay the claim before your credit card balance is due. And you’ll have to bear the cost of generating medical records for the insurer (if there is a cost) that may exceed what’s required with a direct electronic claim.

If it’s gov hospital, I believe they will auto file with your insurance company. If it is not claimable, you will then need to pay cash.

Thx thx, mine is public & so can pay thru healthhub. I only interested in cashback than miles so will be reviewing the various feasible cards options. So I need to inform hosp to not make submit the insurance claim for me, instead bill me directly and I submit the claims on my own.

Relatedly, sometimes it makes sense to use MediSave dollars then swoop in and make a Voluntary Contribution to MediSave, with tax relief. Tax relief usually beats any credit card rebate you could get.

I wonder which takes priority in the claim? Cos I have company, personal & Medisave insurance. I would definitely use company 1st, then personal & remaining use medisave? I understand once u made a claim using personal, future premiums would be adjusted higher.
Both company & personal policies are under same insurer. I read that you can only claim up to the amount u paid for the hosp bills even if u submit multiple claims with the same bill to different insurers.

Generally you should pay MediSave (especially if you’re trying to add funds to MediSave with tax relief) and file the claim with your employer-provided insurance first. Then, if your personal policy would provide additional coverage, file a second claim under that policy last. Make sure your second claim includes information on your first claim. (So that you don’t get over-reimbursed.)

Insurers in Singapore will generally pay back into MediSave if necessary to settle your claim. However, if that doesn’t happen then you’re required to pay back into MediSave. For example, if your medical bill is $10,000 and you used $1,000 from MediSave to pay part of it, then got back $10,000 from insurance in cash you need to pay $1,000 back into MediSave. The CPF Board describes that process here.

You may or may not be subject to a premium increase on your rider (only) if you file a claim. To my knowledge all Integrated Shield carriers with claims-based rider premiums have lower cost riders without claims-based pricing. Switch to a non-CBP rider if this “feature” concerns you.

The paperwork goes like this. On admission , you need to sign you need to charge to medisave then cpf life insurance will kick in. If you did not do this, hospital will charge you admin fee after that to link all these up.

Something like this so that the hospital bill will auto e-submit to the cpf life insurer.

Upon discharge, u can settle at cashier with cc .

I think this is the way the computer works.

You don’t need to use MediSave to pay a medical bill. That’s a choice, not an obligation. And CPF LIFE is longevity insurance, not medical or hospitalization insurance.

It’s Integrated Shield (and MediShield Life), and that’s a choice, not an obligation.

Or later quite often.

My bad. But that is how the computer works.
You sign off the forms with medisave ticked. Then it triggers integrated shield.
If not, pay admin fees to have the bills link up after that.

You can choose! Just tell the hospital how you want to pay.

There are no "admin fees" to pay a hospital bill. Hospitals are very happy to accept cash payments! If you then file insurance claims for reimbursement that's up to you.

What do you mean "get the bill back into the system"? If you pay cash there's no remaining bill! The thread starter wants to pay his/her hospital bill using a credit card.

There might be fees to obtain medical records to file an insurance claim. But that's why you ought to make sure you know how to file an insurance claim, what records (if any) are required, and to get those records from the hospital via any fee-free routes (if available).

Public hospitals have financial counselors that can help you navigate these steps. Just tell the counselor what you want to do, and the counselor will advise you on how to do it. If for example you want to use MediSave, pay the rest using your credit card (to earn points/rebates), file a first claim for reimbursement with your employer's insurance carrier, then file any remaining claim for reimbursement with your Integrated Shield carrier, great. Tell the counselor that's what you want to do, and they'll advise you.

Hi. I found this in faq in moh website.

1. How do I claim from MediShield Life?

The medical institution will ask if you wish to make a claim and request for your authorisation to submit the claim to MediShield Life and your Integrated Shield Plan insurer (if any) on your behalf. If a payout is due, it will be made to the medical institution directly to net off your bill. The balance amount can be paid by MediSave and/or cash.
To estimate the maximum amount that you can claim from MediSave or MediShield Life, click here.
You can find out the list of medical institutions participating in MediShield Life here.

3. Can I submit the MediShield Life claim directly to the Central Provident Fund Board after I have settled the bill at the medical institution?

All MediShield Life claims have to be e-filed by medical institutions to ensure accountability and efficiency in claims processing, due to the high volumes involved. The Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board does not accept claims submitted manually by patients.
The medical institution will seek your authorisation to submit your claim for you. If a payout is due, it will be made directly to the medical institution to net off your bill.
