As I am in the midst of booking my accommodation in Japan, the subject of the hotel chains in Japan is an interesting one.

I think it is a good idea for some of the regulars here to share your knowledge on the Japanese hotel franchises and their unique characteristics. I shall start first:

Name: Sunroute Hotels - e.g. Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku, etc
Price: Mid range. $120-$160 (twin)
Location: Major cities. Usually centrally located in the cities.
Features:

Name: Richmond Hotels - e.g. Richmond Kagoshima Kinseicho
Price: Mid-range, $90-$140 (twin)
Location: Mostly in Kyushu, with a few in various cities.
Features: Check-in and check-out can be entirely done using a self-service kiosk in the lobby

Name: Dormy Inn - e.g. Dormy Inn Namba
Price: Mid-range, $90-$120 (twin)
Location: Major cities. Usually 10-15 mins walk away from train stations
Features: All the hotels in this chain features a large communal bath. Most of them are natural onsen water. Easiest way to get the onsen experience everyday.

Name: Toyoko Inn - almost everywhere.
Price: Budget, $70-$110 (twin)
Location: Major cities and towns. Usually near to train stations.
Features: One of the largest budget chain hotels. Free breakfast of Onigiri (rice balls) and miso soup.

Name: Hokke Hotels - e.g. Hokke Kumamoto
Price: Mid Range, $90 - $140 (twin)
Location: Several major cities - More common in Western Japan.
Features: Most hotels in this chain (except the ones in Tokyo) features a communal bath, but not onsen water. The breakfast buffet spread is quite good.

Name: Hotel Active! - e.g. Hotel Active! Hiroshima
Price: Mid Range, $80 - $120 (twin)
Location: Only 3 locations - Yamaguchi, Hiroshima and Hakata. The hotels are conveniently located in those respective cities.
Features: All black decor

Name: Nishitetsu Inns - e.g. Nishitetsu Inn Shinjuku
Price: Mid Range, $90 - $130 (twin)
Location: Many in Kyushu, a few in other major cities
Features: Part of the Rail Inn Network, they often have tie-ins with transport packages.

Name: Mystays Hotel - e.g. Hotel Mystays West Shinjuku
Price: Mid Range: $80 - $130 (twin)
Location: Mostly in Tokyo region, with a few in Kansai
Features: Discount for staying over 3 days. They have another group of hotels called Flexstays for week-long accommodation.

Feel free to contribute to this list!

Smile Hotels. Smile Hotels

Price: low range (eg. Hakodate 5000 yen range for 2 person)
Location: All over Japan
Features: Rooms are quite spacious for the price, with toilet/bath inside (I can only say for Hakodate).

Hotel Viainn
If i remember correctly this chain is more on western Japan. However, for the standard they have it is one of the cheapest business hotels that I have been to.

For my last trip to Kyoto I paid only 3400 yen for 1 night in a single room  Most probably you will need to take a look at their stay plans to find a day with such a price, but personally I think it is really worth it. Its not as if the hotel is old and run down, everything is pretty normal to me. I have stayed at Kyoto and Osaka and have nothing bad to say about these 2 hotels.

The special characteristic they have will probably be their room card key. Assuming you register yourself as a member, YOU KEEP THE ROOM CARD FOREVER. You insert the card into a machine for check in/out, and use the same key to open the door/power up the room electricity. When you want to stay in the hotel again, use the same card for check in.

And I also vote for Washington Hotel chain.

Not sure if it is common to all Toyoko Inn, when I stayed at Toyoko Inn in Hakodate, Hokkaido, they had free curry rice dinner on Tue, Wed and Thur.

Some of these hotels also offer free coffee which is a significant saving because a cup of coffee is 200-300 yen.

Would like to comment specifically on the Kyoto Daiwai Roynet. Location is a few blocks south of Kyoto station and you need walk through the Kyoto station itself to get to the bus station, so it is about a few hundred metres walk.

Strategically, it might be better to stay somewhere in Shijio area since all the public transport connects to the area and it is near a few of the attractions as compare to Kyoto station.

i stayed in Century Art hotel which very near hakata station. pretty good business hotel, with breakfast provided. u can also consider the Toyoko-inn branch in Tenjin... relatviely new, opened 1-2 years ago

for okinawa i stayed in toyoko inn omoromachi ekimae in nara coz it is right next to my car rental company in DFS mall. i stayed in super hotel nago for a night when visiting Churaumi aquarium. but that hotel is quite out of the way if u are not driving.

for osaka, hotel kinki in umeda is a popular choice due to its location and affortablity.

didnt stay at beppu, so no idea. i made a day trip to beppu from hakata. but i think it is will be good to stay at a onsen ryokan there for a night

i think sgd60-80 range is comfortable for me.

Most of my hotel stays are about that range except big cities as a single traveler. For my trip, I search using booking.com but if you want predictable service and quality, can try focus on Toyoko Inn as they are in your price range for single room.

The room is quite basic but predictable because they standardize their hotel rooms layout. From my observations, their hotel locations are fairly ok, though sometimes a few blocks away from train stations but might be closer to attractions.

My favourite range has been Dormy Inn.
- Nagasaki has capsule rooms. Real cheap and clean!
- Matsumoto branch rooftop onsen is real cool. Can see the city below you. And they have free ramen in the evening.

I wished I have stayed in more dormy inns. Too bad some of their locations are not the best. :(
