As we know sometimes hotels give free complimentary room upgrade.
Have any of you actually tried asking for it instead?

Haha funny question. Never leh.. My skin too thin lol.

I'm always super grateful when they tell me they want to upgrade me without me having to ask, already very happy.

only experience once when staying in MBS, the staff at reception just happily said I was upgraded to certain room but I do not see any difference in the room facilities or size, maybe just higher floor.

I managed to get a higher floor at a hk hotel, same room type but they do charge more for higher floor. Not sure if it's bcos I indicated I prefer high floor during my reservation.

Height matters in some place?

Only if the previous customer is late in checking out. Most of the time is no. You pay for what you get.

Got upgraded a couple of times. First time was in Macau. Someone saw "upgrades subject to availability" and emailed to ask and we got it.

In Indonesia I got 'upgraded' to the same room type from garden to sea view by stinking up the lobby after a 4 day hike. Think they couldn't wait to get rid of us cos the other group that arrived earlier were left waiting at the lobby.

In China I was put on the executive floor probably because I was less likely to steal and destroy stuff than the locals. Room was the same size with slightly more luxurious furnishing but I didn't care.

In Thailand, I arrived late during peak season and they gave me a suite cos they were overbooked.
