My computer is few years old (do refer to my specs)

I would like to buy a SSD but i'm not sure if I currently have the correct cables/connectors to install a SSD.

I read that SSD uses SATA does that mean that I can just remove my current harddisk and 1-1 plug the connectors to a SSD?

If so then i'm also missing 1 extra set of cables because I either plug in SSD or harddisk and not both. No way for me to xfer files/clone the drive? (I do have a portable harddisk..maybe can clone my current internal hdd to portable hdd ?)
