Is it the case that the current gen of gpu is most of the time faster than the previous gen(if its not a rebadged version)? If I compare the 780Ti with the 950, 960 or 970, etc do the 900 series outperform the 780Ti?

They are still the same generation.
The new generation is coming out maybe end of the year.
Pascal for Nvidia.
Polaris for AMD.

Well they do stack up accordingly each gen though.

Like the 780ti is currently about the same performance as a 970. While the 980 is a small leap faster than the 970.

But what NV did was to introduce Titan x which was 30% faster than the 980. And to reduce the price point they came out with a 980ti with 6gb vram. Which is still very fast as compared to last gen worth of cards.

As for AMD is rather boring route. They rebadged the r9 290x to r9 390x and later introduced the R9 Nano/R9 Fury/Fury X. Which was found to be also around 30% faster than their own 390x. But they screw up in a way that all the fury cards were performing too close to each other.

Hoping to see something new cause notice this time round kind of slow for the release of new gpu. Normally nvidia or amd will have something early of the year of end of last year
