Does anyone know what is the setup like

for Singtel TV

if I were to use a Starhub fibre plan

that is either running on an Starhub provided ONT or Starhub provided ONR?

I called Singtel today and the sales person told me that they will provide me with a Singtel ONR/ONT (Cannot remember which one but I think it is ONR) and the Singtel TV box will be attached to the Singtel ONR/ONT. I asked him what will the Singtel ONR/ONT be connected to and I was told it would be the other port on the fibre termination point.

Yes, the sales person is correct as of now. They will provide SingTel ONR and it will occupy one Fibre Terminal port.

1st FTP -- Starhub ONT or ONR
2nd FTP -- SingTel ONR -- SingTel TV box

So I will say no point, just go with Starhub TV+ easier.

But in the future, not so sure if this will change since SingTel will also move to Android TV box, no longer using the old Fibre TV box.

FTP has two ports and if only 1 port in use then use the other available port to set up their fibre boardband to watch their TV Contents. No good if both ports on the FTP are taken up then finished.

Thank you for the reply.

I was under the impression Singtel would be providing their android box.

Is this the android box?

Maybe I have missed something. If I were to subscribe to Singtel TV, are you saying it will not be using the Starhub fibre and Singtel will provide fibre connection for Singtel TV? I cannot remember what I subscribed to in the past, I think I have always subscribed to fibre + TV in the past.

if use this then do not need FTP and just plug to any router LAN port or wifi. Good. If sign Singtel Cast without contract is better, do not need TV box, can watch directly from Samsung TV.

Thank you. This is what I was thinking when I spoke to the sale consultant.

So assume that I am using a Starhub plan with their ONR, where would the Singtel TV box be plugged into?

Yes, but you may still need to confirm whether this newer SingTel Android TV box works with other ISPs. It is so new that no one has reported whether it works with other ISP or not.

It may well work, but it is better to confirm with SingTel.

I understand now. Will check with the Singtel sales person again tomorrow if we are talking about the same TV box.

Will also clarify if they will be providing their own fibre connection for Singtel TV even though I already have Starhub fibre.

By right any LAN on the Starhub ONR but better let the sales person commit himself.

Just confirmed with Singtel.

There is no difference in the setup for DVR or android box for now ie Singtel TV requires the use of one port at the fibre termination point even if a Singtel android TV box is used.

Hi, I am applying for the Starhub 5Gbps ONT broadband promo to replace my out of contract Singtel 1Gbps plan which is on Singtel ONT to Asus Router via Lan port 4 to Singtel TV. The Starhub ONT will probably take over all the same connections except for Singtel TV part. I understand from above discussion that Singtel will probably take back their ONT and change it to ONR to be connected to Singtel Android box once I terminate the broadband.

I want to ask you how the process went for you when you finally did it.
1) Did you go to Singtel to collect the ONR and fix it up to FTP and TV box on your own? Or
2) Did the Singtel technician come a few days after you call them to install the ONR at the FTP via 2nd fibre port and lay the cable until your living room or whichever planned room to connect to your Singtel tv box directly?

Thanks.

From the fibre termination point -> fibre cable to Singtel ONR -> RJ45 cable to Singtel Android box -> HDMI cable to TV.

As my subscription is new, a Singtel technician dropped by to set everything up.

In your case, you probably need to speak with a Singtel sales rep to inform them that you are dropping the broadband part and if they need to change the ONT to an ONR since you can no longer connect the Android box to a Singtel router.

As to which FTP port, it is something that is managed by Netlink Trust as Netlink Trust assigns the ports. So if you subscribe to Starhub 5Gbps plan first without changing your Singtel plan, Starhub will check with Netlink Trust which port is available in your address and will assign that free port to Starhub.

Once both ports are used, Singtel will have to figure out how to manage that migration. In other words, you need to decide if you want to temporarily have no TV or no internet, depending on how Singtel manages the change. My suggestion is to get the Starhub 5Gbps plan in first and then let Singtel figure out the migration with the least downtime for TV. I am making an assumption that Singtel cannot simply cut over instantaneously, which may be wrong.

I called Singtel and they said I need to change my ONT to ONR once I am left with only Singtel TV once Starhub Broadband comes in. I have arranged NLT appt for 13th Jan and SH appt for 15th Jan.
I wish to ask the Starhub technician to lay 1 more cable for me as my Asus router is side by side Singtel TV box. I wonder if he will entertain me...

I also wonder once I have 2 cables in place, whether I can use someone else's ONR to connect to the Singtel Android box and if it will work? If it works, I will have no downtime and no need to face any wrath from the parents for the lack of Singtel TV time :)
If the above is not gonna work, then I have to call Singtel for part 2 once Starhub broadband is up and running.

As for Singtel TV downtime, You could ask Singtel to arrange the installation in such a way that minimises Singtel TV downtime. I don’t think there is any need to think about using someone else ONR as an interim solution as there may be other considerations that you are not aware of. But of course, there is no harm in trying. For me, it is more ideal to get Singtel do the work for you.

assuming...

FTP Port-1 -> Singtel ONR (Purely for IPTV) -> Singtel TV
FTP Port-2 -> StarHub ONT (Purely for Internet) -> Third-Party Wireless Router

ST will issue you an ONR since you were previously using for ONT

1) Other people's ONR will not work for Singtel TV Box. For all local ISPs, the ONT/ONR are tagged to specific subscriber (activated by the backend) and not interchangeable.

2) I believe Starhub does not provide such service as laying Ethernet cable now. In fact, I believe none of the ISPs provide such service now. Last time some ISPs did do that but not now.

3) This is one potential issue of using Starhub as ISP while keeping Singtel TV, when you only have single LAN port (single Ethernet cable connection) from the DB box to the living room TV console area. You will need two Ethernet cables if you need to use Singel TV box (old Singtel Set-top box) and the new Singtel Android TV box) to access Singtel TV packs.

FTP 1 --> Singtel ONR in DB Box -- Ethernet Cable 1 --> Singtel TV Box in living room console area

FTP 2 --> Starhub ONT and main wireless router in DB Box --> Ethernet Cable 2 --> mesh node in living room console area (if you need other room LAN ports to be functional)
Or
FTP 2 --> Starhub ONT --> Ethernet Cable 2 --> main wireless router in living room console area (if you do not need other room LAN ports to be functional)

4) Some more advanced users use VLAN capable switch to use single Ethernet Cable to combine Singtel TV with other ISP. This is a more advanced topic and you may want to search the forum for the configuration. You need to have two VLAN capable switch.

5) Yet another option is to give up on Singtel TV box (old Singtel Set-top box) and the new Singtel Android TV box), as you can use other devices with Singtel CAST app. For example, you can use official Android TV devices with Android TV 8.0 and above (eg: Sony Smart TV, cheap Mi BOx S Gen 2, etc) and Apple TV with Apple tvOS 15 and above. In this case, you do not need to lay another Ethernet cable.

6) In the future, you can also consider switching to Starhub TV together with your Starhub Fibre Internet, if the cost the contents meet your requirement.

I need 2 set of cables, Starhub ONT to living room Asus router and Singtel ONR to living room Singtel android box. Currently only have 1 set now for Singtel ONT to living room Asus router.

Think Xiaofan said it will not work on ONR bought from others so once Starhub broadband is up and running, I will call Singtel to do it.
