how long can a PSU last ??

as above title .. how long can a normal psu last?

i know it depends de but let's say on average ?

is it advisable to replace like 3-4years before it blows if i am not getting a new rig ?

I think psu can last many years. Mine I've been using for more than 4 yrs already no need rma or anything.

Trust me... Its all about luck... Mine, within a span of 1 years, my seasonic X1250 broke down twice.

My corsair HX850 lasted me only 6 months before I RMA and upgraded to HX1050

Assuming you have good luck and your unit runs without problems, it will usually last for a few years longer than the manufacturer's warranty length (for the well-branded PSUs)

Just few days ago, my brother's seasonic m620ii exploded in the middle of the night. Scared the **** out of me. Only reached 3 years out of 5 yrs warranty.

For me, I do use the Belkin Surge Protector for all my equipment. My Enermax Revolution 85+ 1050W has lasted me for 4 years 8 months and it's still running perfectly. My comp is usually on 24/7.

last time back in 2008 got 1 cheap $50 PSU exploded...wah scared the hell out of me..then me paid more attention to PSU le...

so far have used these coolermaster 450watts (4 years), Aerocool 500 watts (5 years), Enermax watts (5 years), seventeam 1000 watts (5 years) 450 watts (5 years), gigabyte 450 watts (3 years)..quite heng nothing pop anymore..didnt need to RMA after that...

agreed ish heng sway de...would expect some of these to fail in the next 1-2 years ba...

Agree. Manufacturers usually have long warranty on their PSUs since they're probably the last few components to fail in an ageing PC.

That said, the PSU fan usually will die before the PSU goes kaboom. Some forumers here already had explosive encounters with their PSUs and the result may take down other components like mobo and GPU.

My Enermax just celebrated its 5 yrs bd.

I notice that dust is the main culprit which caused the premature dead of computer's hw. If you are hardworking at sucking them out regularly, it will likely last longer than those unsuckeds.

Things that die first in PSU:
1. Fan
2. Capacitors

Fans have a limited lifespan, even the best San Ace or Deltas. Fan "failure" can also come about from failure of the control circuit, not just the motor or lubricant. When the fans die (without the user knowing), the internal working temperature of the PSU increases, eventually causing failure of the remaining components.

If cheap lousy caps are used, you get bulging caps, or the caps can even "burst" with a bang. See the capacitor plague(s) in the last decade. See also why Japanese caps (rated @105C) are preferred.

For those who are good with soldering and if warranty is over, you can always replace the caps on your own.

Quality type of PSUs have Protection circuits while cheapo/non branded PSUs don't have the protection circuit.

with my many many build of PC for friends, relative, office..
so far the component for highest failure rate is GPU usually 1.8 years to 3 years.. (depending on luck and cooler)
followed by PSU.. brandless approx 2 years for me.. branded.. 4 to 10 and still counting..
usually fail at X+ 1 year..
