My wife just gave birth to my first child a month ago. Quite a big baby at 3.4kg during birth. She drank 90ml every 2h intervals now. Told by my friends and colleague that it was abnormal. Might actually be over feeding. When she cry, all my mother in law think about was to feed her milk. At the rate she’s going. A tin of Nan would only last my daughter less than a week. Not so much on the money but am worried that my daughter is drinking too much formula milk in a short interval. :(

everybody is different, including babies, some drink more some drink less, if you are worried, go consult a PD. Don't care what your so call friends, colleagues think. they are not responsible, so they can say anything they want.

some times growth spurt, their intake can double. Babies are quite simple, feed until full they will sleep. if cannot sleep, check for bubbles by burping or whatever else bothering them.

cry can be dirty diaper, uncomfortable conditions or just hungry. they will refuse the bottle if full la. dun worry so much.

My baby was drinking around 120ml breastmilk every 2.5hr at 7-8weeks old. we only know when start to bottle feed her once a day.
90ml I think is fine, try to observe for other signs of hunger before feeding baby. Like whether baby suck your hand when you go near or not.

Points made by chehjin are very valid. All babies are different.

Babies cries for different reason...

similar to my case... my mother-in-law thinks baby cry is hungry. For my case, it is not. My baby just wants to sleep but he can't because he is too full from overfeeding. He finally stop screaming after I follow the website on how much to feed formula to a baby based on his weight.

It is so difficult to let them (+ other relatives) accept that fact even after I've proved that to her.

Exactly my point. I feel miserable seeing milk forced down her throat. But what can I do for my baby?

If you're confident baby is crying due to other reasons... Then comfort baby to stop crying? If she's not crying, your MIL won't be "forcing" milk down her throat

You have to prove that your baby cries is due to other reason and get your spouse to support your theory.

Although, for my case, mother-in-law still don't believe and even get other relatives to pressure me ... Lucky, hubby and mum believes me.

BTW, my son drinks every milk that is available in the bottle. He doesn't know how to stop even when his tummy is so bloated. So he suffers for about 1.5 months until I figure out how much to feed him...

Can read this article:
https://www.healthychildren.org/Eng.../Amount-and-Schedule-of-Formula-Feedings.aspx

It did mention not to go over 960 ml in a 24-hours period... For your case (12*90=1080), definitely overfed...

What about breastfed newborns, how do you really know whether the baby is drinking enough (i.e. whether you have enough supply) or not?

My bb only coming in September so it's still a ways away, but just wondering, is it generally you just let baby suck until he is satisfied and don't want to suck anymore, then burp n let him sleep?

Yes. You can only guess by looking at the signs baby gives. If the baby is hungry she will cry and do sucking action with her mouth. A good sucker can finish drinking around 10mins while others can suck for like 30-40min for each feed. Different baby different style. The mother skill of latching also greatly affect the sucking time, good latch really makes a big difference. All about trial and error and experience.

different babies different habits.

wife uses a hakaa breast pump on the side that is not being latched, the amt leaked is a rough indication for her.

It depends on the amount of milk the mother produce and usually in the beginning the milk flow is slow therefore it seem that newborns is always at the mother breast. There are some mother (pls check with baby's grandmother and great grandmother for historical reference) produce a lot of milk.

Like what sellun it also depends on the latch on.

But babies have a need to suck and they felt comforted (that is why pacifier exists) so it might not be true that baby is hungry therefore wanted to suck. You really need to look out for signs

Breast fed babies are always asking for milk not only because of the amount of milk but the fact that mother's milk is easily digested by the baby therefore tummy is empty very fast and baby will have the need to get that filled.

Thanks for the calculations. That was really helpful. Maybe I was paranoid due to the recent case of over feeding by nanny article. Not sure if you’ve seen it. I also believe that she just want attention and she doesn’t know what is enough for her. To a point where she’s confuse whether she’s really hungry.

She was pushing the milk bottle away and reluctantly finish the milk. Am I being sensitive? Not to disrespect my MIL for her many years of experience. You will definitely feel uneasy watching her drink that much in a short period. Still finding a good way to get the message across.

My MIL don't like to waste milk, will keep telling my son there is still milk. That why when I 'take' over, he doesn't know what is full and doesn't push away the bottle. Even now, he only push the bottle away when he is already over fed; means he will vomit out the milk when he moves too much.

If your child knows how to push away bottle when she is full, is good. When breastfeeding, it says to feed on demand.

If she needs comfort (the need for sucking), get her a pacifier. Prevent SIDS too.

If baby refuse already should stop. The most u try 1 more time but I wouldn’t do it. If hungry again, baby will show signal. Don’t force feed. Bad for baby.

If u have trouble convincing others, it’s either u cut access and u do it yourself or u get an outsider in. For example PD. I myself have no qualms at telling my mum or MIL off. I am the type that can cut 100% access too. Means I will just say, you no need to come help already, when baby bigger then bring to visit you.
