Yes, more than enough. $5.5k includes our transport costs. We did not buy any Pass except for a 5D Shoryudo Pass while in Nagoya to Kanazawa (paid online before we flew) and Tokyo Wide Pass while in Tokyo. Cash for local bus and ferry journeys and ryokan stay.

You'll probably faint when you see the cost for my lodging. Would you like a breakdown of my spending on lodging and transportation? ;)
How much in total SGD you spent on your lodging? I pretty much booked all my accomodation for my apr trip liao for 2, going for 17 days total about 2.5k on lodgings. 1.3k on air tics, prolly gonna get JR pass for 7 days also.

Thinking of changing 3k cash you think enough? I only left to spend on food/shopping/daily commute in subways/bus/attractions and also airport transfer i guess.

I spend 1.4 k in 8d7n Tokyo trip. Meal prices are okay, it's the small things that creep on you. Like drinks, snacks and glorious shopping. Bring Visa card for 5% discount at participating outlets.

My lodging in April cost $8.7k for 19D. So yours is very cheap. Airfare was $1.5k. :D

And you still brought 5.5k there! :s13: Almost Europe price liao.

Excluding shopping. And a ¥58,000 dinner. Lol.

It's literally swim-mountain-play-water mah. See fishermen catch firefly squids (they glow in blue) in the middle of the night, showers and winds so heavy and strong until attractions are closed, plus a 4-hr journey (bus> train> bus> ferry) to a ryokan that's in the middle of nowhere. See flowers, see festivals and see people. Japan is not just about eating and shopping in the cities.

And how many actually get the chance of experiencing all these? I'm a very lucky gal. Must give thanks to my SO for bringing me out. ;)

Yup, you should. Really enjoyed myself, minus the crazy weather.

Doing another trip after CNY. Visit new places - Izu (north + south+ east + central, west a little difficult to reach) and Niigata. Flowers (tons of flowers to see), illumination and snow festivals this time round. But way cheaper. :s22:

for all my trips to Japan (minimum at least 2 weeks) my expenses has never exceeded 1.5k...for my last trip which was around 16 days that I just returned from last week....I spend a total of 1.4k (not including rail passes which is a further 300)...and the 1.4K includes proper lunch and dinner...metro and bus journeys that the passes doesn't cover....admission fees for different attractions and...and alot of snacks and souvenirs brought back home to share...I actually think I spend quite alot of money on unnecessary stuff and could reduce my expenses further...but i'm on holiday anyway...it's the most appropriate time to spend money on unnecessary stuff

total expense is around 3.5-4k for everything inclusive of pocket money..hotel..passes and air tickets

Very disciplined.

I intend to do a cheap cheap trip in future, minus air tickets (prefer to fly direct unless no choice). Hostels and business hotels. See how - sometimes festivals are quite costly. Lodging cost would increase. My cheapest room for the upcoming trip is ¥6,200/night. Most expensive is still those ryokan stays. Pray for good weather and hope for peak flower-blooming periods. :)

Actually the morning tour is a seasonal event, organized by the museum. They only have limited vacancies for each morning. I registered on the first day when they opened registrations.

Quite interesting, you board a small ferry at 0200hrs with locals (also tourists) to where the fishing area is. Then the locals would clap and cheer every time the fishermen threw the squids up in the air so that you could see the blue lights. They also grilled fresh squids for us to eat on the boat. The locals would thank the fishermen for their hard work. After you're back at the museum, there's another round of boiled squids with mustard.

Am thinking of splitting my expenses in this manner.. For a 12 days trip, not sure if it's realistic?

$800: Food
$120: Transport (exclude JR Pass)
$50: Airport Transfer
$500: Shopping and misc (shrines etc. tix)

where will u be going?

$800 for food is about $67 a day... which is quite ok for normal meals and snacks and drinks in between
$10 per day is ok if u are travelling within the city. may not be enuf if u are making day trips out of the city
airport transfer depends on where u staying and which airport u going.
shopping very subjective. but u can always use credit card for more expensive items

For Osaka, definitely go for Hotel Chuo Selene. Right beside dobutsuen-mae station which is a few stations away from Namba only. Some people may find the area sketchy but that's opposite the station so just come out from the exit and walk past 1 pachinko parlour and you'll see the hotel.

The lowest the room can go is 3700 yen, but average is around 4000 yen. Room is big by japan standards.

If 8 days Kyoto, s$1000 enough for tpt, food and admission tickets?
