How reliable are iphones nowadays?

I bought a XS Max a year ago 2nd hand, and recently the touchscreen go haywire. I went to apple store and they quoted me $489 to repair. I haven't tried 3rd party repair yet.

For that price, I can almost buy another used XS Max again. Or am I better off getting a new iphone (like iphone SE) so that I can get applecare. I'm worried that since repair costs are so high, better to get a new phone.

Is it generally safe to get apple phones 2nd hand or have their standard dropped nowadays?

Your XS Max already more than 2 years since purchase date? Because even with AppleCare only 2 years warranty anyway.

But so far I think most Macs still quite reliable, but ya still got chance lemon can happen. So far luckily haven't use my AppleCare for laptop, for phones I didn't buy because only 1 more year support yet pricey.

Since 3GS, I did not have any issue, bought AppleCare everytime. So when I got the 8 Plus in 2019, I decided not to get applecare. last year, just after a month when warranty expired (13th month), 4G radio kaput. Apple is charging me 600 for replacement. This phone is a secondary phone, so lightly used, never been dropped or anything.

Reliability is one thing.

But I really like their after service support. Fuss free and simple.

2nd hand XS Max, how did the previous owner treat it?

My 6S Plus LCD burned in but still usable after changing it 3 years ago.

I personally find iPhones and Apple services rather assuring, really unlike my past years' experiences with the samseng.

Having said that, I've never dared to buy a used phone not knowing who the previous owner was, and how the phone has actually been treated. If I do decide to get one, think I can only rely on the honesty of the shop to tell me how the actually condition of the phone is.

By the way, I also have an XS Max, HK set bought new back then. It's still going strong today, battery health's 100%. Though it's my secondary phone, I do use it daily.

The only issues I had with iPhones is with 7 Plus and X. 7 Plus after a year of usage the logic board failed, and X was within the first year, camera module failed.

Other than these I've absolutely no issues with other iPhones I've used.

Generally the iPhones quality are very good.

The only time I had issue was with the Xs when the faceID suddenly cannot detect my face to unlock 1 month before the warranty ended. Brought it to genius bar and after some test, they did a1-1 exchange for me as it cannot be “repaired”

In fact I am still using my old iphone6 for zoom/ webex meetings in office (using WiFi). Performance is just as good.

U can get new iphones off shops like red white. Cheaper than rrp and u can get apple care+.

I am still using my XR that i bought from redwhite. This phone is 2 year plus going to be three.

Peace of mind for two years and u know how u treat your phone. If second hand, you will not know how the previous owner abuse it.

My iphone 7 is still functioning well too. Just that battery health is bad

My 4s still working and it become my alarm clock
6s+ both working well after changing the batteries during the offer by apple

No issue.
