How to access data on spoilt HDD?

my 320GB WD external drive has spoilt.
any idea how I can retrieve the data inside?

it's a WD Elements 320GB USB2.0 drive.
I tried taking apart the external casing... seems like it's a direct USB chip :/

Try changing USB cable, ports or PC.

If still cannot, then nothing much you can do. Either RMA the drive if still under guarantee or seek professional help if data is important.

yea. data is important.. it has all my schoolwork backed up inside.

What exactly you me mean by spoilt. Not working? No sound/ got clicking sound?

How did it become spoilt..you dropped it?

never dropped it.
the PC basically just stop thinking the drive suddenly
no sound, nothing.

it seems like the drive can't be detected at all
which makes me kinda suspect... the controller is spoilt

Yes, could be controller chip damaged. Also could be motor seized or the heads got stuck, preventing the disk from spinning.

For Windows, you can perform a chkdisk [Drive:] /f command on your hardisk.

If this method can't work, i suggest to pay to retrieve your data
