A neighbour of mine is going for 2 weeks of work trip. We often see each other at the lift , the carpark , the fitness corner and sometimes when coming into the estate passing the guardhouse .
he is going off for work trip and asking me to help him startup and drive around to warm up the car . It’s a manual Honda Civic. I see the label at the back with the word “i-vtec”
I heard a lot about vtec kick in yo! I’m wondering how can I setup this effect?

I-vtec don't have vtec

Before one hits 100km/h, you probably already reach a traffic light already...
Hmm got gear one... Gear one can reach 100 kph? Some most need 2-3 gear chnage to reach 100 kph and one will enjoy vtec open yooop 2 times to 100 kph... Those engines have high rev short gearing... So visiting 8-9000 rpm is common.

I heard last time, Honda civic needs 6000rpm to activate vtec and Honda citi needs 4000rpm to activate vtec. Oh Singapore road, usually it may mean vtec is never activated till COE expired. On automatic transmission, it will likely switch to higher gears to achieve the higher speed first and before it hits 100km/h to activate VTEC... So, unless one persistently keeping speed way above 100km/hr, likely no chance.
6k rpm hard to reach meh? I sometimes just step on accelerator and rev to 7k for my car to reach 100 km/h when joining expressway.

Google gemini says moi honda vtec activates around 4500-5000rpm, subject to load and throttle position
So if you are BBFA, it will activate sooner.

If you are BBFA and your passengers are all BBFAs, you will have the fastest activation.

Now many car companies have valve timing and lift control. Vtec was famous because honda was the first to intro.

Now most brands catch up like
Toyota got vvtl-i VVTL-i
Mitsubishi got mivec
Nissan got vvl and vvel.
BMW got vanos and valvetronic
Porshe got variocam plus

Many of cars from these brands dont need to activate valve timing and lift control at high rpm. It could start as long as 1500rpm.

That's provided your engine is very small. Imagine you have an automatic 5 gears 1.6-1.8L civic... Are you sure you can have your VTEC kick-in on Singapore's road? Why automatic Citi can hit VTEC easier? Because it only has 4 speeds auto gear. Nowadays, I am guessing all automatic civic should have 5 speeds auto gear and thus harder to have VTEC kick-in.

The roar is intoxicating.
First time I drove type R, once Vtec kick in I was sweating even with AC... It's exciting and scary because of roar or sound like the engine is tearing apart. The kick is very different from TC cars

6000 rpm, you are wasting a lot of fuel to do vtec. Fuel is a limited resources and will depleted eventually, learn to cherish it.

Is like someone use a pillow hit very hard on your back... Fun right... I driven my bil civic SIR with a B18C inside.

Nowadays engines power very linear.

i-vtec is the newer version. It's always active and continously variate the cam lobes and intake timings depending on how far the gas pedal is pressed versus the rpm.

So there's no longer a distinct point when the engine switches to the higher profile cam lobes.

Iirc on the old vtecs (without the "i"), vtec activates at around 6k rpm.

Also, there's some misunderstanding over the years. The engine's max output is what one has already paid for the car. Vtec doesn't give the 180 hp 2,000cc more hp.

What Vtec does it switches the engine to a more fuel efficient mode for normal driving. Normal driving do not require the full 180 hp that's achievable at 6k rpm, which burns at lot of fuel.

Only during spirited driving, does it release back the full range of the amazing 180 hp which Honda managed to squeeze into their overpowered and compact engines.

Older VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) works by using hydraulic oil pressure to lock three rocker arms together at high RPM, switching from efficient cam lobes to an aggressive cam lobe.
This forces intake valves to open further and longer, significantly boosting power at high RPMs while maintaining smooth idle at low Rpm.
There is distinct change over at 5700-6000 rpm and rev to the redline..
