Hi guys! Currently I have a Hitachi 1TB which is my old drive. Just bought a new WD 1TB Black for additional space.
As the WD is better in terms of performance I would like to clone over the old Hitachi hdd to this one.

Problems I have met in the past is that the new HDD will tend to boot but the old one is unable to use anymore. Then after awhile both HDD can't seem to work and I have to reinstall the OS from fresh :(

Might be a problem with the bootloader etc...
Do I need to unplug the old HDD and plug the new HDD to the old SATA slot for it to work? Then after booting up with the new cloned HDD, shut down and plug both HDD in?

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance! :o

There are free cloning software at the manufacturer sites which you can download and use. After cloning just remember to either change your boot sequence in your Bios to ensure the cloned drive is booted first or swap the sata port of the 2 drives. Once confirmed you are booted using the new drive, format the old one to prevent confusion.

Use Clonezilla, DriveXML....DriveXML might be an easier solution since it is has a very familiar GUI.

Most cloning software will copy the entire drive image including the MBR. But with the new image, you will need to reboot the OS because the new model of the HDD needs to be registered in the Windows registry.

You can consider using Parted Magic, I find it relatively straight forward to use. You did not mention what errors you had.
