I was assigned by my officer to conduct BAR(Before action)-DAR(during action)-PAR (Post action) for 2 mths, is there any strategy you guys use, so that the men wont think we are just wasting their time?

also, what strategy do you use to help them give constructive feedback? instead of the standard "what went well" "what can be improved" kind of question that might as well dont ask de..

isn't there a standard set of questions or model to follow to reach the desired outcome? just follow the doctrine will do.

honestly, if you are facing nsmen, you have to be the focal point and be the faciliator. there is absolutely nothing you can do to make them feel it is not a waste of time. even yourself will feel it is a waste of time.

why? becos nsmen feedback during all this bar, par, dar becomes just paperwork. nobody seems to take them seriously. the same issues will repeat every year. When was the last time you seen anything in the bar, par, dar got reviewed and changed your unit's SOP?

The only time I see something gets changes (or appears to be changing) is when the nsmen themselves write in to mindef and feedback directly. This usually stirs the hornets nest when the people with crabs have to start a report into the feedback, but dun expect much out of it.

Sorry if I sound very cynical, but this is what I have been observing in my years in SAF.

Before conducting this , have you even undergone proper ALP training ? If not , then you should not be the one conducting this. If you have gone through it's time to review the ALP notes .

To start off a proper BAR , check back whether your unit did KM any previous PAR / AAR record of the similar activity. That will be a decent benchmark to start off with. The rest is for you to refer to your notes and find out

Just follow the standard set of questions. I was a platoon instructor for ATEC and NSMen btn. Just do your what went well?, what can be improved? They are experienced and they already know where they went well or what they need to do if they want the pass stage 2 ATEC.
