Be convincingly stupid and then see who is out to scam or exploit you and who is there to help you.

but you are going to deal with acquaintances and friends and relatives and colleagues and bosses and vendors and clients.

so your way is not going to work coz you make yourself be worth less in the eyes of others ... when they know you are testing them in such a dumb way. You are scheming and yet without finese. Cannot give you big projects or trust you.

too many ways ... to list.
but one of the ways is ... just observe the person...
Is what he say and what he does consisent in his daily interactions with people or you or in the project etc etc?
you talk to people.. they already sizing you up.

But if you are dealing with business associates, then there is no point finding out who is evil or good.
both are standing on different sides or same sides. You can only ensure you know what you are getting into and what is the possible downside risks and the mitigation strategies.

It's actually really quite futile to differentiate good or bad with work relationships.
common goal, you will also work with the bad/good person against a good/bad person
different goal, you will also work against the person no matter if he is good or bad.
