My mistake in learning Japanese by myself was to take shortcut! I jumped straight to learning the vocabulary WITHOUT knowing how to read even the basic characters, and just read the English pronunciation.

Don't do that! spend a few weeks learning how to read then move on to the audio course. Hiragana is used for basic words. Katakana is used for English pronunciation. Kanji is just Chinese characters adapted into Japanese. No need to worry about Kanji yet.

I suggest sitting down and writing what you learn (how it sounds like in english) as you listen, because this helps in revision. Can revise in 10minutes every lesson, instead of listening to the 30min lesson again.

Once u know how to read, write, basic phrases, highly recommend to buy a book called Japanese Demystified by Eriko Sato, it cost 28 frombook depository and explain to you the reasoning behind common words/phrase.

After the audio courses can consider, expanding vocabulary by downloading an app called obenkyo. Do the identifying vocab words, lvl 5 then lvl 4 etc.

At this level, u can start reading intermediate japanese novels, use google translate if u come across difficult phrase (take picture with google translate app). Also of u read genki books now, its very easy, and a bit waste timr
