Because you're on 10.6.8, that's why there's no recovery partition. Recovery partition is only available on 10.7 and above.

If you still have the installation DVD for OS X 10.6, follow steps on: Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard: How to Erase and Install - Apple Support

If not and if your mac supports upgrade to OS X 10.10: upgrade to OS X 10.10, it should create a recovery partition then you can follow the steps on: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X

what about those with recovery partitions.

what are the steps ?

1. Download a copy of OS X 10.10.2 from the Apple store
2. Download Disk Maker X
3. Have a 8GB thumb drive ready Disk Maker X will create a bootable OS X 10.10.2 installation media.
4. Boot into USB installation media and click disk utilities and click erase disk.
5. Proceed to install OS X 10.10.2 it will create a recovery partition in the process.

-----------
1.To boot into recovery partition hold on to the option key and power on your Mac and select internet recovery.

2. Click install OS X Yosemite and it will download the latest copy of the OS from Apple server. Installation will begin automatically once the image has been downloaded.

A Thumbdrive is not necessary if recovery partition is already present.

Just follow steps from my initial reply : OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
