I basically want to have a wireless network in my apartment that is not occupied so I don’t subscribe to any ISPs. However I want to have a wireless network in place so that I can stream movies from my Ipad to my Chromecast and to operate / set my Xiaomi robot vacuum using my phone.

Tried setting my my spare RT-AC87u for this purpose but when it’s powered on, it stays in 4G mode, and the Asus splash screen saying the Network cable is unplugged comes on.

How do I configure it so that I can use to as mentioned above?

If your devices don't require internet connectivity to work, then you have set it up correctly.
There is no "4G mode" for this router, I'm not sure what you are referring to. To not display the " no network " error msg, go to:

web gui > admin > system:
Enable WAN down browser redirect notice = NO

The 4G it defaults to is my StarHub 4G. It doesn’t connect to the wireless network

Perfect. That works thank you

Do note this merely disable the notification router sends out when it senses there is no internet connection. Some devices may still choose to auto disconnect from Wi-Fi when it detects there is no internet and switch to 4G.

It works and I’m able to connect to my devices. Sadly, I think the Xiaomi needs internet to properly connect my phone to the device. I can go through the connection steps but the last step in setting up the pairing is where it stalls.

Now trying to see if my Chromecast is able to work...

Hmmm no luck also. Last step it says can’t connect to the internet and so can’t complete the last step of setup =(

In the end I got the Xiaomi to work by using another phone’s hotspot as the “wireless network” and set the configuration of the robot. Means no need the router liao haha

So complicated. Sigh.

I’ve solved the Xiaomi issue, but is there another way to ‘cast’ movies from my iphone/iPad to my TV/Chromecast, short of buying a media player?
