Hey guys,

Noob questions here so please be patient.

I have been wanting to upgrade my families' macbook pro hdd to SDDs given the decent prices for 250GB models.

It would be a waste to throw away decently 2 decently new 500gb HDD from my macbooks. So most prob making it into NAS would be a good idea.

So my questions are:

1) Is it possible to buy SDD online and fix into the macs (pre-2012 models) myself? Any special tools that will cost me an arm and a leg (or whatever limbs I have after owning Apple devices) just to change it?

2) How do I use the old hdds for NAS? Just buy those racks and mount them in? Is there adapters I need to get for those hdds to put into the rack?

3) Is there a software should I use for the NAS if I want to plug it into my router and let PC, macbooks and chromebook access it? Or will the NAS magically pop up in my explorer/finder interface?

4) Can my iphones and ipads access this NAS?

Thanks and appreciate your advices!

In response to your first question.... If I'm not mistaken, the only "special" or unusual tool you might need a Torx screwdriver. Be sure to get the right size. Check iFixit if you are not sure. They have really good guides.
