need help here. does anyone know if i can connect a harddisk with exisitng data to the gen 8 microserver? it seems that i must create a array the the built in raid card before the harddisk can be detected?

if that the case, does it mean that harddisk with exising data cannot be connected to the gen 8?

I dun have a gen 8, but my experience with server raid is that once u create a raid volume, existing data is usually wiped.

My advise is u back up the data before creating a raid volume. I'm not sure if u can create a degraded mode raid1 with that raid controller. If can, that might be the only way u can retain ur data. Experiment with a disk that contains no useful data first

anyone on the gen 8? using it mainly as a media streamer and first level backup, so probably going with xpenology. i'm wondering if the recommended installation is still through esxi + rdm to avoid the issue of the loud fans?

Which raid controller is good for this gen 8 microserver? Thinking of raid 5, running on esxi 6 hosting ubuntu server and OS X. Or should I run in raid 10 for better performance instead? Will have a 250gb ssd as cache. 4x 3TB wd red. What u all think

Presently I doing software raid 5 on N54L in Ubuntu server. will be moving it to gen 8

Sorry to bump this up, but my N40L's PSU just died today. Are there any replacement PSUs available locally? Alternatively, can I just get a regular ATX one and store it outside the microserver's case?

Too bad, i just spolit one of my PSU today else can pass you 1 since i going to throw away my N36L

The PSU part number is 624197-001 or 625147-001 (The one i got from my N36L)

N40L PSU is down in the bin, now i fitting the N36L PSU onto my N40L

it's running freenas now with 4 SSD + a 10gb ethernet card (switching to SFP+ soon over the weekend)

Running iSCSI connectivity for my ESXi servers

Tested the throughput it's around 300+mb/s sequential which is good enough for my home VM lab purpose. With higher CPU power, i'm quite sure the throughput will be much better but i just need this lab for a few months for my certification so not willing to invest more
