I am planning to go to Hualien next month.
Staying 1 night in Hualien.

Day 1 : Taipei to Hualien by train. Arrive 11am.
Day 2 : Hualien to Taipei by train. Depart 5pm.

Which recommend hotel near train station?
Where can I go on the 1st day?
For 2nd day, I will be arranging a half day tour to Taroko.
Any driver to recommend? Looking for a combi to fit 6 adults.

Thanks.

Not likely you can get tickets over the counter as summer holidays is coming real soon.
Please kindly buy your return sector. Some trains allow boarding freely, but not all. In particular is taroko express and puyuma. Strictly no boarding without seat placement. If you do so, get ready to pay 50% more on top of the actual tickets.

By the way, when will you be travelling?

I'm travelling on end of July.

Will there be an option to buy the returns tickets in one transaction? Or will it have to be too? I didn't know about seat placement and the charge for it! Thanks for the info

I guess you don't know what Taroko Gorge is!

The journey back and forth by car takes approximately 2 hours already.

Tarako can't be done in a day. Ideally, a few days is better for Tarako. Most people just pick and skip some parts of Tarako.

Bro can check why you mention Tarako can't be done in a day? Thought only to see the gorge?

If you are familiar with driving mountainous road and know where the location are then why not..If not just book driver and save u the headache..

Taroko Gorge is not just 'one place'.

Links and image have been given. Why don't you make the effort to read and understand?

Taroko National Park

There are several scenic spots/trails at the National Park.

One day is insufficient. The Baiyang Waterfall Trail takes at least an hour one way.

I rode (a scooter) from Taipei to Su-ao to Hualien to Taroko Gorge to Hualien to Shitiping to Taimali to Hengchun to Kaohsiung to Tainan to Taichung back to Taipei. I'm not sure of the road conditions between Taichung and Hualien. If I'm not wrong, it does go thru the mountains. I'll need to take a look at the guide book when I get home later today.

Thanks bro. Didn't read the whole thread so missed out on the Taroko explanation. So how long did you spend doing a round island tour? I am also thinking something similar down east coast and up west coast. Where do you recommend for pitstop?

I am ok with driving. Do they have proper signage ? As i can see from the map, Taroko ends up on the east coast. Is it far if i were to proceed at Hualien?

The driving and scootering routes are different.

Depends on you want to go on the highways/expressways or the expressways that scooters are allowed. There are different terms for the highways/expressways that only cars are allowed. I can't be bothered with the right term. But please do note the difference. The routes for scooters are more scenic and it's more of a detour. The cars go on the motorways/highways/expressways. I remember it based on the 梅花 sign.

Taroko is approximately an hour from Hualien by car/scooter. Hualien is also on the east coast.

My trip was 17 days. 14 days on the road.
Stopped in all those cities I mentioned in the previous post.

Thanks bro. Bro, your stop as in stop to rest for a day or 2 or stop to just see the scenery? I am thinking of staying at Taichung, hualien, tainan, but towards the south I'm not sure whether should I be staying at kaoshiung/kenting/taitung or...also heard a lot about nantou...not sure if it's worth staying.

2 nights in Su-Ao
2 nights in Hualian
1 night in Shitiping
1 night in Taimali
2 nights in Hengchun
2 nights in Kaohsiung
2 nights in Tainan
1 night in Taichung
The rest all in Taipei

Thanks bro. You night stops in Hualien is for Taroko? is it more convenient in that way instead of going from Taichung? Did you do any mountain climbing?

No, I didn't climb any mountain.

You need a permit for trekking (for most hikes/treks).

TS,

You might want to consider delaying your taroko gorge tour to your next trip. My Hualien friend told me a couple of main roads at Taroko Gorge were severely damaged by the current typhoon (Even the newly repaired ones are not spared). Most of the the trails are closed off due to fear of landslides as well. You can check if the trails are open here. Hope this helps!
