I have not used Huawei phone but all Android phones work almost the same way. When you are in Spore you will set the SIM 1 slot (where your SG number is kept) to 4G and you can set SIM2 slot to 2G if you have another sim card. Else the 2nd slot is not used.
Assume you go overseas to Thailand and you buy a local data sim card. You will put it into SIM2 slot. You will then set SIM2 slot to 4G (or 3G). Then you set SIM1 slot to 2G. When overseas you will only use your SG sim card to receive telephone calls. WhatsApp and other app will still reach you because the app is linked to the phone. Things like WhatsApp will still work even if the SG number is set to 2G.
When you return to Spore, you reset SIM1 slot to be 4G again. Now if you do not have to change SIM1 slot to 2G, you can always take out your SG sim card from SIM1 slot and put it into SIM2 slot. When you return to Singapore you just swap the sim card back to SIM1 slot.
Because I always travel to the same oversea country I am lazy to take out and put in sim cards. So I use the software method to switch the 4G from slot 1 to slot 2. And reverse again when I reach Singapore. I have been doing this for close to 5 years.
Hope that clarify the point on how to manage the function of each slot.
