Take a look at antidote samples of P9 photographs, Deckard

Nope. The camera on the P9 will never replace a dslr or even a mirrorless. To start out with, that phone camera is not even make by Leica.

Any photographer that sing songs around p9 camera replacing dslr simply because they are paid to do so and nothing else.

But then a good camera on a phone is very important. It cannot replace a proper dslr or mirrorless but it can add as a secondary image capturing device, esp for social media contents or just perform a fast capture.

No use having "dslr feature" on a phone cos if I can spend that amount of time to do the settings on the phone I would have done it on my dslr which will result in much better photos.

Launch, point and shoot and still can give good photos, that is very important for current phones.

Can't agree more. With the recent slew of flagship smartphones which boast amazing cameras, there is no reason to blindly get the P9 based on some pseudo sample photos and a Leica logo slapped on the phone's back. Plus, the sample photos are edited or shot by a professional. Not something that can be achieved easily for the everyday casual smartphone user who just points & shoots.

There's also the downside of Huawei having one of the most horrendous Android skins ever. The Nexus 6P was a hit as it ran stock Android. The P9? There's a reason why the marketing keeps focusing on the Leica branding rather than other aspects of the phone. Go figure. :)

I am new to this thread, so probably someone already mentioned what i gonna say.

Branding ...Leica really help to push the sales, those who use Leica will know about the pricing of Leica, lens hood and cover will probably cost you S$200, expecting Leica made lense on a phone which cost around $800 is really a joke. But do you really care, many Leica fans want that "Leica feel", lense cost thousands over dollars... if a phone can produce something similar (although inferior quality), i don't think it matters anymore, at least for me lol.

Indeed photographers are paid to praise the phone, they will never replace DSLR or mirrorless or their Rangefinders with just a phone lol. But most of the time you only carry a phone with you but not a camera, although mirrorless is getting smaller but will you carry with you everyday? I do keep a spare LX5 in my office drawer but how often will you use it? Last used was maybe 1 year ago. Phone with DSLR feature maybe is useful for beginner to learn some basic things photography, which i did.

Huawei...indeed sounds cina, but most of you will probably have the first USB dongle to connect to 3G mobile network with Huawei brand? At least i had 3Gs then 4Gs still Huawei lol. Cina brands like ZTE Z7 series, first Dual Sim Dual 4G phones around (if i remember correctly) earlier than big names like Samsung, LGs or even XIAOMI, oh yeah, this cheap Z7 also comes with excellent image quality with DSLR features too lol.

With all said, i will still buy this phone to try out, really hope can get one soon.:s12:

Yes, agree with you that you won't alway carry a camera around beside your phone. But how often do you take a photo with your phone and you need to set the shutter speed, iso, AF etc before pressing? 20%? 30%? 50%? 75% or 100% of the time when you are taking photos?

I'm not against anything or anyone here. Having a phone with manual camera settings is always good. A nice to have but not a must to have or claim it can replace this and that. I have see samples of the P9 phones and yes, there are good. I intend to go android this year and narrow down to either the huawei p9, htc 10, Sony XP or the nexus. :D :D

Honestly not very often...only when i travel for business....normally no one will bring a camera when you travel business....day in day out in sg is impossible.

Even for those who owned a DSLR or Mirrorless, how often you need to set the shutter speed, iso, AF etc before pressing? 20%? 30%? 50%? 75% or 100% of the time when you are taking photos? Or just Aperture priority or even IA auto mode to shot? LOL Purpose to buy that those because it produce better photo compared to point and shoot mah, same like phone lor, it produced better photo nia :)

Rumour that there will be Sony X premium lol... i also having S7 edge now,but cant wait to test P9 to decide which is keeper... my very first criteria for phone is not camera actually... but Dual Sim Dual 4g....so rule out many other options especially that fruit phone.

Basically Lecia appointed them to make the lens. Lecia of cos will be involved to make sure the output are up to their mark. This is also the first time the German company work with a china company. Look at zeiss, Lecia just wanna follow zeiss. Every p9 sold also mean Lecia is making money.

The test is not whether the phone camera can replace the dslr or ilc. It's more like, if a photographer had no big camera with him, can he use the phone camera to make an image which is going to be good enough to be proud of? Captures that feeling of art?

seems like it. Maybe MT can clarify?

Here’s the official statement:

The P9 and P9 Plus were co-engineered between Huawei and Leica. This is the first collaboration between the two companies following a long-term partnership that was announced in February. From the very beginning, Leica has been deeply involved in the development of these devices. There has been significant technological collaboration between Huawei and Leica around many aspects of the camera, including optical design, imaging quality, image data processing, optimization, and the mechanical construction of the camera module to the graphic user interface. The devices meet Leica’s highest imaging quality standards.

Those sites doing reviews just want to stir up sh*t on the HW Leica partnership. Much like the G5 metal body incident where G5 is indeed metal body but with thick layers of paint so some people are calling LG a liar because the G5 doesnt have the metal premium feel because of the paint work but the fact is still valid where it does have a metal body below the paint. Imagine your car has layers of paint on it so the car is not metal body? Pretty stupid imo.

Leica has their name stamped on the P9 so they obviously have to take risk and make sure the camera performs. Although you can argue to the fact that they are just "partnership", "co-engineered", "leica certified" since the lens are made by a chinese company instead of Leica but so what? Most of the products are made in china but designed in other countries anyway. If these lens were in fact made by Leica, this phone will not be affordable to general public. So be reasonable with your expectation. Whether the P9 camera performs or not, time will tell. Let the pictures speak for itself.

Fully agreed.

It is up to individuals to justify whether Huawei P9 is worth to buy or not because of the camera and/or other aspects.

Michael, which one you plan to get? P9 or P9 plus? other than bigger screen, ram and rom, P9 plus has better focus for front camera...

Anyway hoping the price is reasonable in Singapore, UK and China price varied too much...to pay premium for international rom, i may just get one from china instead.
