I just dont understand why 3080 is just ~35% faster than 2080ti.. i was expecting something closer to 2x...this is because 3080 has 8704 cuda cores vs 4352 for 2080ti. Double... Memory also faster. Not to mention new architecture and new process.

And then despite all the performance/watt claims, its not really better than 2080ti. Tomshardware show around 270w for 2080ti and 330w for 3080. Thats also around 30% increase.

So where is the improvement??

The 3080 is meant to compete with the 2080/2080 Super. Many people forget that. You want faster, get the 3090 or wait for the 3080 Ti.

The 3080 feels alot like transitioning from 1080 Ti to 2080 Ti but at a much lower cost. Either way it's a gain. Only thing is the much higher TDP. Seems like even PCIE 4.0 bring nothing significant to the table either.

the original intent is "an upgrade" for the 2080 ... when 3080 TI comes out then we can talk compare it with 2080 TI. thus many or most "hype" it as a "bonus" to be able to overtake 2080 TI

Perhaps in a bid to rush it out earlier, they didn't do much optimisation? hmmmm open for discussion

Its not about the card. Its the core. 2080 is a 225w card with just 2944 cuda cores. 3080 is almost 3x more. Much faster memory. Power is around 50% higher. And its 7nm vs 12nm.

You shouldnt compare 2080ti to 3080. Then why not compare GTX 980ti to 1080? The performance increase is even lesser during that generation but i dont see anyone complaining.

980ti has 2816 cuda cores @ 250w, 1080 has 2560 @ 180w Despite having less cuda cores, its faster. It also consumes less power. Clearly a step forward.

1080ti 2584 @ 250w, 2080 2944 @ 225w

3080 8704 @ ~330w, 2080ti 4352 @ ~270w.

So I give your Car one more engine, can run 2x Faster?
It doesn't scale that way Bro.

My CPU got 8x Core CPU also doesn't run 8x Faster than 1x Core CPU or 2x Faster than 4x Core CPU.

To me, more workers can do more tasks faster. More efficient workers, better workflow, better managers, and faster tools also help.

I suppose more workers (cores) with inefficiencies somewhere is hampering the productivity. Maybe some optimisation will come later

But is your 8 core CPU just 30% faster than 4 core? Or certain applications can show much better scaling?

Btw, its not 1 more engine since its still single GPU. This is like bigger CC engine.... Double the CC but only 30% more horsepower, consumes 30% more fuel too.

It's not supposed to be compared with the 2080ti to begin with.
Improvement is you get the FPS of 2080ti running @ 1080p with ray tracing on the 3080 @ 1440p.

Fyi. The cuda cores at every gen is different. You cant count core count vs core count of a different gen. They are different to begin with. Doesnt mean the 3080 is 3x more cores than 2080Ti it should be faster by 3x. Doesnt work that way or rather it doesnt scale that way.

And fyi again. 3080 is not suppose to compare directly to the 2080Ti. But more towards the 2080.

This is or was at roughly the same price at launch.

I feel the performance is not bad as compared to the RTX 2080. As compared to the 2080 Ti, the performance isn't great mostly because of CPU limitations at the lower resolution and graphical settings. When I say lower, I mean anything lower than 4K resolution. Perhaps with Rocket Lake and Zen 3, we can see some improvements at the lower resolution.

What I don't quite like is the fact that it requires more power than the RTX 2080 Ti. I actually feel Nvidia is regressing on their power efficiency since Maxwell and Pascal days. Even it delivers around 50% improvement over the RTX 2080, the TDP/ TGP has gone up substantially (increased by 100W). This comparison gets worst when we pit the 3080 against the 2080 Ti with a TDP of 250W.

The 2080Ti is still a very capable card. It’s pricing sucked because of NVidia dominating the high end GPU space. With proper undervolting and OCing, the 2080Ti remains excellent value if you can get it at around $700-800 used.
