Hi guys

From what I've been reading online, most sites/articles state that games do not need the i7, that it's only used for 3D rendering, video editing etc. Apparently hyper threading even messes up games?

Is that still the case as of today's games? Are there any known games that cannot be fully supported by a high end i5?

Thanks

i5 models are usually quad core cpus. most games can fully utilize all cores. Hyperthread is a hit or miss. Its still proven till today that the extra threads does not provide any benefit in FPS for games

well from what i saw on overwatch performance review, it seems they do utilise all cores on the i7. tested with GTX 980ti playing on 1080p with low setting can reach 300 FPS :s13:

Overall, its still boils down to which games you are playing, for example like arma 3, heard that its cpu intensive (well im not sure), since most gpu review indicating that it required more powerful cpu as well.

5 years after getting my 2500k, I now wish I paid that little bit more to get the 2600k back then.

If u intend on keeping your mobo+cpu for a long time, go i7. That extra threads will help in the long run

But are there actually games that a high end i5 cannot handle? I wanna get Rise of the Tomb Raider but it seems to recommend an i7...

i5 is more than enough for game. In fact, for many games, i3 (dual core + HT) is ok. Only some game can benefit from the 4 core. I saw a youtube video showing a video with FPS graph for comparison (run with GTX980Ti) last time. If I can find the link again, I'll post it here.

Go for the one that fit into your budget. 4 cores are enough for gaming, even for the next 2-3 yrs down the road.

that digitalfoundry benchmarks is for those ppl who want the run the game at max only with no compromise

for many games there are a few settings with disproportionate load to CPU but little improvement in graphic satisfaction

tone that specific setting down from ultra to medium and the advantage i7 have will be narrowed

Till date, I still have not read about any games that is bottlenecked by a i5 CPU, only the GPU.

I have a i5 2500 and it's still going strong. I'm upgrading to skylake 6600 later this year only because I'm moving to a mitx setup, NOT because I've felt the limits of the 2500.

If you're working on a budget, I will say go for the i5 over the i7 and use the money saved on a better GPU.

If you have unlimited budget, then you can go for the i7. There is little harm in getting a more powerful CPU (unless it's true that hyper threading can mess up games, which I have not heard of).

well this i agree, that most games are GPU dependent than CPU, unless those games u playing really required lots of CPU power as well.

i7 cost more so unless you have unlimited budget, going for a more powerful gpu coupled with i5 is always a better option, if gaming performance is your only concern.

Hmm actually, upon further reading of DX12, the answer is not so clear cut...

The thing is, CPU bottleneck for DX12 occurs at much much higher no of cores than compared to DX11, but this will of course depend on the games, some will bottleneck lower.

The question now is if you don't get a super high end GPU, which will bottleneck first? Your i5 or your i7? If it's your GPU, then there isn't a point to get an i7 but if you use the money saved from getting an i5 to get a better GPU, then your i5 might become the bottleneck :s22:

For futureproofing, I might have to seriously consider getting an i7 now, and slowly upgrade my GPU every few years, since it's much more of a hassle to upgrade CPU compared to GPU.

planning for DX12 games to come?
he is using the xeon cpu at 2.67ghz as seen in task manager ???? if he tested the benchmark by switching off the cores then sure bottleneck at the 4core @ 2.67ghz ..... big difference from i5 K cpu 4.5ghz easily

HENG AHHHH I don't play RTS games
