Regarding ThinkPad Warranty Upgrade program, has anyone done it before?

Does it mean we can extend beyond 4 years if we are already on 4 years on site?

Yes you can. Call up and ask the price for extension. I remembered when my T61's 3yr warranty was about to expire, I rang up my reseller and she quoted me the following:

For laptop under warranty, extension of warranty prices:

To 4th year: $2XX
To 5th year: $4XX

For out of warranty laptops, we can only buy maintenance agreement:

1 year maintenance agreement: $2XX
2 year maintenance agreement: $4XX

($XX diagnostic charges to determine machine condition before buying maintenance, if machine condition is too poor then will not be able to buy)

Have no experience upgrading beyond 3 years.
Upgraded my wife's 10 months old x100e to 3 years, then I found out that the 3 years is based from the base warranty period and not from the day you upgraded. Although surprised but quite happy yo be able to extend the warranty.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think that the T-series offers 3yrs warranty as standard because it is a business laptop? But I believe if the shop offers a lenovo laptop at a cheap price, usually, it is because the warranty is only 1 year.

Azrielsc, you are right, X100e comes with only 1 year warranty. And after 10 months of ownership, I paid Addons in Funan (they are the authorised ThinkPad agent for extending warranties) $239 for a 3-year onsite warranty by Lenovo themselves. What I didn't know was that the 3 years was backdated from the day of purchase and not from the day I paid for the extended warranty.

It was a confusion at first but when they explained, I finally understood. And warranty can't be extended if you are too close with the warranty expiry date.

Thanks for the insight, regarding the start date of the warranty. Am thinking of bringing in a T420s from US when it is launched and choosing the cheapest warranty and then extending it over here. This really helps.

It is a modem you can use for fax or whatver that requires your ThinkPad to hook up to phone line or land line...

Both points are true. No USB 3.0 and HDMI port for the T420 and T520.

Usually Thinkpad design is very slow to catch up. Just like T61 do not support USB2 internal disk although the chipset do support it.

This is because they want to carry out a series of tests to make sure that flaw of latest technology can be minimized.. Just like the problem happened on the latest Intel Sandy Bridge processor.

This is not true.
From the reply for my T61. They say they turn off SATA2 to save battery.
I think this is true and T61 with 6 cells battery hardly reach 2 hour.

If the chipset support it but maker choose not to implement it. There must be some reason other then testing !

The Thinkpad team is simply slow to react to market need - just like not introducing HD display and staying on 1280 resolution in the older Thinkpad.

By the way x220 do support USB3.0.

Again, this is not technical issue as USB3 only available in i7 model. Is a question of how much you want to pay for it.
