welcome... possible if the space is used as a hidden partition... check wif the other ppl... mayb they can confirm this.. :)

If my free space is 29.7GB, that's like minus 10GB off my 40GB harddisk space!?

hidden partition? thought it's like only 5GB? Why is there a further 4.55 GB used already? Questions, questions, need enlightenment from you guys... :bounce:

5 gb hidden partition + 5 gb of preinstalled apps and the OS.

that leaves you with about 30 gb of free space.

Hi all,

normally do you all partition your harddisk, if yes usually how do you do it for a 40GB? I've got 29.7GB left and been wondering how to divide this into 10/20 or 25/5 or 15/15 or other sizes. Any advice?

Can you guys stand this kind of configurations from IBM. I mean if you are suppose to get 40GB of disk, you should at least get around 36-37Gb of usable. Instead you are having 1/3 of you disk space used up by defaults stuff. I feel like being cheated .....

Yup, I do partition My Hard Disk.
You may partition your Hard Disk using Software such as Partition Magic.

For my case, I do not mind this kind of configuration done by IBM as I personally feel that It is very convience.

But it still depend on each other preference.

after reading many posts about IBM's hidden partition size & also the different sizes reported, i've seen that if you got your IBM from schools or JOS in their fair over the wkend like richard79, then your harddisk actual free space tend to be smaller than those out in the retail market.

this shall have something to do with the imaging & other software for students

ok, but mine wasn't from school or JOS, I mean is my available harddisk space, approx 30GB out of 40GB free normal? For those who has a 40GB harddisk space, T40, what's your free hd space like, is it similar to mine? Thanks.

Hi Kenshin79,

The hidden partition is not meant solely for schools students or any promotional fairs. It's applicale to all IBM new series of laptops all over the world.

Yes, the hidden partition is mainly for imaging and for easy recovery. I've tested this myself yesterday and the actual recovery takes around 20mins ( fresh-built)

Well, dunno, i just feel 20GB left for me to use is just not enough. let me try calling IBM helpdesk and find out what's going on .

This is a widely known feature of the IBM notebooks, not something that IBM tries to hide from the consumers.

I think u can wipe out the entire HDD n reinstall XP using the original CD n then add in the drivers n IBM apps (all freely downloadable from web). Then u can get ur full HDD space.

In any case, u are now only 5gb poorer than other brands. I guess many T40 owners take into account the HDD size requirements when they make the purchase, thus many actually go for the 72/76A model which offers a 40gb HDD for significantly more money.

Well said ahlip

Yes I agree with ahlip. You can delete that hidden partition so that you would could regain the harddisk space that you wanted.

In fact, you can do this by going to the BIOS setup and change the setting about the hidden partition that IBM uses and you can reformat that.

As for me, I don't mind that hidden partition since IBM is not hiding it from customers.

:) Cheers!
