I am thinking whether to replace my current T61 or not... Have been using it for 3 years... Everything is fine except the battery life and it is slowly out of warranty soon...

I was thinking to extend the warranty but it would cost me a bomb... Around $700 for another two years extension...

And the battery life is barely around 1 and half hour with everything low... Pretty tough when you stay unplugged at outside...

just a small issue to share with u guys before i leave....

Harvey Norman offers 4 years warranty extension for Lenovo machines, on top of the 1 year base warranty. This is only offered to customers during machine's purchase.

The warranty extension covers hardware support and Megalink is Harvey Norman's appointed and authorised service center.

Please advise customers to call Harvey Norman Extended Warranty dept @ 1800-4386393 if their base warranty has expired and if they purchased the warranty extension from Harvey Norman.

Old IBM T42

Hi guys/gals,

Actually have an old IBM t42, would actually like to ask anyone can intro any shop to upgrade it without getting burnt in the pocket? Would actually like to upgrade the memory, if possible graphics card(is it adviceable and worth it) and repair my screen(my screen turns on red and last 30-60mins and black out) and also get a new hard disk and reinstall a new os.

I know it is almost failing, seeking advice to what is worth while and more adviceable. Of course buying a new one would be better but even buying a new one would like to make this old one perform as a reliable second.

Thanks in advance for any comments and advice from all.

Upgrading of a laptop, and an old one at that is almost next to impossible. Graphics cards for laptops are different from those u see for PCs - they're often compact and soldered to the motherboard, and then there's heat issue which is pronounced for laptop.

For memory and hard disk upgrade, it is possible but you have to check if the type of RAM used in your T42 is still in production. DDR1 is all but gone and the price of the remaining pieces are high. DDR2 and 3 are still common and is not very expensive. LCD screen you have to check with IBM/Lenovo if they still have spare parts for yours.

OS upgrade also possible, but with the T42's hardware power sticking to Windows XP is advisable.

My 2 cents is to upgrade to a new laptop(perhaps another Thinkpad? :o) instead. You save all the trouble upgrading.

What I can think of is 2x 1Gb DDR1 400 Ram (~100$), 1x 160Gb or 250Gb HDD (~80$), Win 7 (~150$ for OEM) can be used on Radeon 9600 Graphics powered T42 and the CPU can be upgrade too... up to ard 2Ghz dothan chip.

However, like ceecookie said, upgrade for T42 is definately not worth you money and time.

Happy X100e owner. Bought it for $699. =:p

The keyboard is amazing. And as for people who complain about short battery hours, I can use it for about 4.5 hours outside and it is way more than enough for my uses. Managed to even complete a few reports in three hours.

Truly a fantastic portable yet budget-conscious machine. :D

I thought the default one is balance?

Anyways, wwan may consume more power then wifi which made it a bit shorter. From the beginning can last slightly more than 4, then after few months cannot leh.
Oh.. Mine came default on some Energy Star plan.

Yup like ryhn said comes with both. The picture shown misleading... Seems like the X200s picture. :s13: And it IS a very good deal! :D Was planning on waiting for the Toshiba Portege R700 but on hearing the SRP I decided to settle on the X201 since I have long been considering it already. Lenovo's online resources are also like unbeatable compared to other PC brands.

I bought a 8 cell for my 2 1/2 year old X61 last week for $224, inclusive of delivery. Manufacture date is May 2010.

Thinkpads are designed to last hence I decide to splurge the $ on a new battery to get it going for perhaps another 2 years.

Lenovo X series screen pales in comparison to other brands but more than make up for it thru its legendary keypad and durability.

Hi ryhn, the X201t is not available locally, but i've brought some units in for my customers. Costs 2.4k for the basic configuration after discounts.

The multitouch panel is really sweet. Very responsive to contact and colours are still vibrant. No fingerprints too. :)

There is a rumour saying that lenovo is phasing out X301 T_T

Yes. Replaced by T410s and the followers.
