Hi guys! I've been reading the posts but I'm a bit lost here...

I have a thinkpad x201 that comes with a 128gb SSD. It's a great laptop but I want to add on an internal hdd for more storage capacity.

Could anybody please share if this is possible and what I can do or where I can go to get it done?

Oh.... I can't just add on another ssd or hdd. =p I was hoping it can be done....

Then I will just use the ssd that comes with the laptop and use an external hdd.

Unfortunately, you cannot get a mSATA SSD for the X201. The X201 BIOS and hardware won't detect it.

The only way is to either replace your 128GB SSD with a bigger-sized SSD (exp) or downgrade to a mechanical HDD (cheaper but slower).

I don't think the X201 got msata? Intel only introduced it in the sandy bridge series. And there should be only 1 hdd slot so it's either ssd or hdd

Well, this is a quote from a guy on the lenovo forums,

"The planar has to have a special line run from mini-PCIe to SATA for this drive to be recognized/bootable - so older planars like X201 are just not compatible. I know the planars in all the coming ThinkPad Classic (T,W, and X) will support it and the new Edge E220s & E420s will. But I am not sure if the lower cost systems like regular Edge 14/15, L/SL-series, or X120e will support it or not.

Hi guys. I don't think that will ever work. Only the new systems (Huron River-based) coming out this year will support the mSATA 80GB SodaCreek drives."

1 guy tried it with his X201 & a mSATA Intel 310 80GB and it was not even detected, even after upgrading to the latest BIOS. And I doubt you want to try those "special" BIOS. Bricking your X201 is a real possibility.

right now i am in the usa for 2 more weeks. the thinkpads come with 2 electric pins. how do u guys who ordered from usa use them in singapore?

Just get a multiple plug adapter. Or come back to Singapore and buy the Lenovo power brick.

SLS have tons of Lenovo AC adapters . Just get from there. about $45 per brick

Guys, I am using X220 , and now Lenovo has created a12GB partition to store the recovery software. How do you all create this recovery software for booting and recovery in an external HDD or thumb drive.

If this is possible to copy and save it externally , how do I merge this partition with my main OS partition. I have a 160GB SSD and these 12GB meant a lot to me in term of space

Can create them under ThinkVantage Tools> Factory Recovery Disks (Note: You can only do this once).

Second part i'm not sure liao.. 'cos I replaced my original hdd with a intel SSD after that liao.. but might be difficult because iirc the recovery partition is at the front of the disk.

Thanks. Actually, they have the save to disk option when you click on the partition. Also after that Lenovo has the utility to automatic merge the partition to existing one. I am loving this X220 now. They even come after with new bios 1.24 after just updated the latest bios days ago. Very on the ball
